Hoffner Hand Spear Review

100 Knives in 100 Days Giveaway Day 89: Hoffner Hand Spear

Brian Hoffner is the real deal. A former military dog trainer and civilian law enforcement officer, he started Hoffner’s Holsters and Hoffner’s Training Academy in 1985  “so I could train and outfit ordinary citizens to defend themselves and protect their families”.

“For more than a quarter century of developing the very best training, and outside the box holsters, I now had to engineer the world’s best defensive knife to fit the world’s best knife training. Hoffner knives were born. The patent pending ergonomic design for the Hoffner “rear-grip hold” prevents the knife from slipping the hand while the index pivots provide balanced, secure, and reflexive (muscle memory) handling regardless of what Hoffner knife you carry”.

Hoffner has donated a Hoffner’s Hand Spear fixed blade knife to our 100 Knives in 100 Days Giveaway, which we will be given away on  Day 87- Wednesday, August 28th.

Personal Observations:

When you pick up the Hoffner Hand Spear, you feel its potential. If you have had any defensive knife training, you immediately recognize the tool’s potential. Even if you have not, you will recognize the balance, heft, and way it indexes in the hand.

From an ergonomic point of view, the contours of the handle hit me in the proper spots. Both in a traditional grip, and a reverse/fighting grip.

The texturing is a double edged sword. From a tactical point of view, it grips the hand and doesn’t want to slide. From an EDC point of view, an extended session of cardboard cutting will likely be a bit uncomfortable.

Fit and finish are what one would expect of a premium knife. The plunge lines are even, the scales are in alignment, and the hollow grinds of both the working and false edges are executed flawlessly.

Outside Review:

I am actually really surprised that I could not find an outside review of this one. Given Hoffner’s crossover with the firearms community, there are dozens of more sites and I would expect to find something. But I didn’t.
