Moran\, Jr. Museum & Foundation will hold a Centennial Celebration to honor what would have been famed local bladesmith William “Bill” F. Moran\, Jr.’s 100th birthday. This free event\, which is open to the public\, will take place on Saturday\, May 31\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes the W.F. Moran Bladesmith & Artisan Academy in Middletown\, Maryland. \nBoth of Moran’s original shops will be open\, with live blacksmithing demonstrations by skilled artisans. Guests are invited to tour the museum\, enjoy birthday cake\, and take part in a commemorative ribbon cutting ceremony at noon. For this event only\, the William F. Moran\, Jr. Museum & Foundation will display 100 of Moran’s knives\, one for each year since his birth. \n“We look forward to sharing Bill’s work with the community\,” says Robert Wilson\, executive director of the William F. Moran\, Jr. Museum & Foundation. The Foundation\, which has invested over $1 million in its building\, the museum\, and the academy are all dedicated to teaching Moran’s methods of knife forging. \nMoran is known for reviving the art of knife forging in the United States\, including ancient traditions such as pattern welded or Damascus steel. When he first began making blades\, they were commonly ground out of stock material as opposed to the traditional method of being heated and hammered out in a forge. \nIn 1976\, Moran founded the American Bladesmith Society to bring the knowledge of knife forging to the public. “He didn’t want to keep his knowledge to himself\,” says Wilson. “Bill worked hard to pass it on\, to keep the traditions alive. His passion for teaching forging matched his passion for forging itself.” \nMoran passed away in 2006 at the age of 80. Today\, Moran’s legacy includes the museum and foundation\, as well as the W.F. Moran Bladesmith & Artisan Academy\, which was recently certified as an American Bladesmithing School. “We welcome everyone to experience the legacy that continues to shape the art of bladesmithing today\,” says Wilson. \n### \nAbout William F. Moran\, Jr. Museum & Foundation and W.F. Moran Bladesmith & Artisan Academy \nThe purpose of the William F. Moran Museum & Foundation and W.F. Moran Bladesmith & Artisan Academy is to educate\, preserve\, and promote the ancient art and craft of hand forged knives and tools used in bladesmithing\, and to establish William F. Moran\, Jr. for the collection and presentation of hand forged knives and blacksmith metalwork and to preserve the Moran forge as a working bladesmith shop. DESCRIPTION:Mountain man style throwing\, with a 10′ foul line. \nSaturday and Sunday – The throwers meeting and discussion on game rules for each day will start at 8:30 AM.\nIf you would like to practice on the competition range\, you can arrive at 8 AM.\nThrowing will begin at 9 AM.\nGroup photo will be taken Saturday morning before throwing begins.\nDinner Saturday evening for anyone who would like to join at no extra cost. Dinner will be around 7pm.\nPrize money for pro 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place in both men and womens division. There will also be knives\, swag and more to win for all who participate! Hope to see you there\nYouth $25 / Amateur $55 / Pro $75. Cash payments only.\nAnyone who dresses up in primitive or pre 1840’s clothing for the ENTIRE weekend will receive a free TX State Swag item.\nPro throwers are eligible for a cash prize if they place 1st\, 2nd\, or 3rd. (3 women and 3 men will earn a cash prize)\nSide Note:\nI have a few things of all sizes to loan out if you would like to dress up. Please feel free to reach out\, I have different size skirts for ladies and shirts for both men and women.\nLimited free tent camping spots available at the event\, please RSVP. Bastrop State Park is only 5 minutes from the event and beautiful that time of year. For the park\, you will need to make reservations as soon as possible.

With the number of qualified Master Bladesmiths that will be present\, the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) is making this event an official judging venue where Journeyman Smith and Master Smith applicants will be able to submit their finished knives for judging and be awarded JS and MS certification. With this event the ABS can offer our members a more affordable\, and less stressful\, environment for the certification process\, from performance test to judging and the awarding of the stamps\, all in one location. \nKnife Show\nAll registered attendees are invited to have a table at a one-day knife show at this event.
