Back to the 1MS…

According to Filo,

“This knife was initially created by Rob Cabrera in the fall of 2016 as an EDC knife. The idea was to create a knife that would function as a true multi-purpose knife that also maintained a solid self-defense personality.  With a proper anatomic configuration that places the knife in the proper aligned angles for slicing and piercing from a proper biomechanical perspective. This design criteria allows for a fully functional knife that carries its weight across the board, whether you are hunting, fishing, or in a self defense configuration.”

Specs :

Steel: 3V

Blade Length: 3.5″
OAL: 8.5″
Scales: Blue/Black/Grey G10 “Burl”
Sheath: .08″ Boltron

Personal Observations:

Rob’s goal in designing the 1MS was to create a knife that would be useful for the 99.9% of the time you are not engaged in a life or death struggle. Yet it would have bona fide defensive chops as well.

The ergonomics are an interesting case. The knife’s contours fit my hand well, but the texturing on the handle scales is pretty extreme. This is necessary because the 1MS eschews the traditional pinkie ring found in a Filipino Martial Arts knife. Instead, the 1MS depends on the texture to maintain a firm grip when used in a reverse stabbing grip in a defensive situation.

Not being able to test the knife myself, I cannot testify how my hand would react to the scales, but at a typical EDC grip strength it does not bother me.

The fit and finish of the 1MS is great. Grind lines are even throughout, the finish is even, and the milling on the handle slabs is clean and crisp.

I was unable to locate an outside review of the Filo 1MS.

I would like to thank Rob, Cat, and all the folks at DoubleStar Blades and Filo Bladeworks. I have enjoyed getting to know them in the past few years, and I am looking forward to driving up to Kentucky to visit.
