Hey everyone…

On of the last things I did before we switched the site over to version 2.0, was to screengrab the last page of comments from the “Pardon Our Dust” post. Y’all had the start of a good classic car thread going, and I didn’t want to let it disappear.

If you haven’t checked out our “We’re Back” post, please go ahead and check it out. Lisa mentions some of the featrues we will be rolling out in the coming months, and we want our regular “WOTers” to be our beta testing group. So as we roll things out, you all will be the first to get a look. You know who you are. We will be in touch.

I will have an official return of the Weekend Open Thread next Friday. Call it a Christmas Miracle if you will.

Have a good one everybody, we’ll be busy all weekend behind the scenes.

H. Clay Aalders is a lifelong edged tool user. He spent the past 20 years as a woodworker and fishing guide in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Tennessee. While guiding in Idaho, Clay worked part-time writing for a local newspaper, and upon moving to Tennessee began writing for the blog The Truth About Knives - spending his last 5 years there as Managing Editor. His background is in fixed-blade hunting and bushcraft knives, but has jumped into the world of vintage slipjoint collecting with both feet since coming to work at Knife Magazine.   1. Happy Christmas Weekend All!
    We are in day 2 of the GREAT FREEZE OF 2022.
    We do 100+ here with ease, but single digit cold with -15 below
    wind chills-not so much. Cold like this is rare. I don’t know how you all do this. We dropped 20 degrees when the front came through (45 to 25) in 40 minutes.
    And when I look at the national map???
    CMEAT, Jason??? You guys okay? We’re cold, but you guys are in the deep, deep freeze with frozen precipitation!!! Hope you’re safe and warm.

    Clay, I see we are your beta testing crew. I’m probably the least tech savvy of the group. So if I can figure it out, anyone can. I’ve enjoyed exploring the site. Things are in different places, but I’m figuring it out. Sort of like when I was a kid and my mother would clean my room- took me awhile to figure out where she put things!
    I like the layout. There’s a logic to it. Just waiting for our first assignment-and memes. It is the weekend after all! 🙂

  2. One more “thing” . . . that automatic “scroll” at “HOME” changes the screen at ‘5 second intervals’. My brain remains pretty quick . . . “I think therefore I am”; It is not a negative feature of the web page. Maybe slow it down a bit?

  3. Took me a while to find the string of comments, as the “latest comment list” we are used to on the right has gone. The new format looks fine, I wonder if we get/will get an edit button for comments?

    1. StuartB: I continue to move my cursor around the page to discover “where and what” I am looking to see. I agree with you that the former “string of comments” was easy to locate; thus, enabling me to add a comment. I understand that the webpage upgrade is a “work in progress” and the “Knife” folks explained that the next several months will see the web page evolve. I look forward to having an opportunity to share photographs of knives and increase the knife conversations. Stay positive!! Clay says he “returning the WOT” on December 23rd!

  4. Almost forgot this “Moran” moment on Saturday the 17th. One of our “Foundation” members brought a “Colorado” camp knife to the meeting. He bought it off the internet; I do not know the specific site. If you have “Master of the Forge”, “Fire and Steel” or “Forever a Legend” you can see this Bill Moran knife. “Arizona Custom Knives” shows a “Colorado”, too. ($14.5K). In “Forever a Legend”, page 125, are the camp knives that “Bill” made: “Rio Grande”; “Colorado” and “Maryland”. An inset photo on this page shows “Bill” and “**Duff Matson”. “Matson” is holding a “Colorado” that “Bill” presented to him.

    **Duff Matson was a colorful character that the late Jim Phillips chronicled in a book titled, “The Devil’s Bodyguard”, copyright 1986. Jim Phillips served in the Special Forces and was in law enforcement in New Jersey. He was a longtime friend to Bill Moran, Aubrey “Barney” Barnes, Jay Hendrickson and other folks in the knife world. He served on the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) Board of Directors.

    Well, that “Colorado” is an awesome knife.

  5. Hit a garage sale on Saturday the 17th. Going home from “Moran” meeting, heading down South Mountain on Route 40 . . . saw the “Garage Sale” sign on the right. What the heck, take a look. Definitely a “garage turned into a disaster, stuff everywhere”. Saw a display case with knives . . . Chinese SAKs, etc. Spied the tell-tale “hole” and “Spyderco”! Covered in gunk. Bought it for $5. Cleaned it up, oiled it: Delica 4, VG-10 serrated blade, all stainless steel frame. Not a keeper. It’s in the peddler bag.

  7. Nice to see the update to the website is heading in the right direction. Been missing the WOT. Hope everyone is healthy and had their Xmas shopping done.

    Just watch zac in the wild’s latest YouTube video where he was talking about Bowie knife history where he had Mark Z on in an interview.

  9. “West Washington Street Pawn”, Hagerstown, MD . . . Friday, December 16 – “Benchmade Mini-Bugout, Hunter Orange, MIB” . . . 1.5 oz. Christmas gift to somebody, probably, . . . after I tire of enjoying it.

    Well, I did not expect to see the new “knifemagazine.com” this Saturday morning. My brief scan of “what is and what is coming” has me encouraged, especially for us “regular folks”.

    I am off to Middletown for the monthly meeting of the “Moran Foundation”. Ed Clarke, JS-ABS is going to make something for the fireplace . . . artisan ash shovel, maybe a poker. Bill Moran kept his creativity stoked by making metal sculptures, e.g. Boot Hill, Excaliber, and other art objects. Of course, his knives are legendary.

    As always, enjoying the knife life! “Hocky”
