It has been a while since I did a summary of my carry for over a three month period. I really enjoy writing these articles and they seem to do well in terms of readership data. This article covers the last quarter of 2020, one of the most competitive quarters ever for EDC gear.
The Riv is an amazing knife, with great egros, excellent materials, and a very confident appearance. It is like a Pilar and a Dragonfly had a baby. That combination should tell you how good this knife is. I also love the wire clip. I know that wire clips are passe, but they really do work and here, the stiffness and size are just right. Not much complain about on the Riv, which can make for a boring review. I will try to find some spicy introduction. See below for more on the Mini Pineapple.
These are both items still in the review hopper and both are really good. The question is whether they are great or really good. That thin line is difficult to surmount and only more time will tell me if either of these pieces of kit do that. The American Blade Works knife is a MASSIVE knife for a 3.25 inch blade. Its weird, like a reverse Tardis or something—its bigger than its dimensions. The thing I am still figuring out with the Mini Pineapple is the switch and the texture. Both are different than I would prefer, but I am not sure that is a bad thing. Still working on these two. Either way, they are good pair and the flipping action on the ABW Model 1 is exceptional.
What was your primary 2020 EDC?
Knife-wise, it was probably the ZT0235 or my Maxamet Spydie Native. Plus my Kim Breed for the heavier stuff. Mask, Bandana, Paracord Bracelet, and Phone round out my on-person EDC. Then add my 5.11 MOAB bag, which has a full complement of EDC gear. But more on that later.

i’m not gonna list the fifteen or twenty things i’m apt to haul along on any given day. well, i might, but i’ll save it for a weekend open thread. the eskabar is omnipresent along with a folder.

On my person: Always a custom fixed blade on a belt sheath; Always my Leatherman Skeletool CX w/”bits for every occasion”; Always a slipjoint, usually vintage; and the Dragonfly 2 “wharnie” in VG10 (must have in the produce section!). Now, in my vintage F150, I am always prepared to survive the next catastrophe. . . because I’ve got SPAM!! Hocky

I carry a pretty modest EDC: a Nightcore Tiki flash light, and a rotation of carry blades that run from SAKs, Opinels, Real Steel Luna Lite, Tangram Orion or various others that might tickle my fancy for any given day or task. I only get to carry a fixed blade when out in the wilds; California rules.

StuartB: I thought that California was “out in the wilds”? Maybe I am thinking about “California Girls” according to the Beach Boys. I usually follow the rules, especially here in Maryland. However, I live in Western Maryland (The three counties west of Frederick MD, past South Mountain: Washington, Alleghany and Garrett) and we are seeking Statehood. The Democrats east of South Mountain (until you reach the Eastern Shore which remains a Republican bastion). IF the District of Columbia gains statehood, THEN they should buy Prince Georges County and Baltimore County and on up the I-95 corrider to the Mason-Dixon Line. That’s all for politics today, America is Beautiful Hocky

Hocky – our knife laws are not too bad state wide, though LA adds a layer of nonsense. We can carry any fixed blade as long as they are not concealed, so that does mess with a regular EDC carry. The risk, return does not justify trying to get around it, especially as you can conceal a folder. Makes no sense, but again it’s California!
