Weekend Open Thread and Giveaway

Source: Knife Magazine

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, it is time for our Weekend Open Thread and Giveaway, courtesy of Browning. Only drawing one winner this week, but we have a pair of items. We are giving away the third of the Prism III’s, and this time I am pairing it with a Pro Hunter Base Camp flashlight. It is a 3-function light, with a 505 lumen bright setting, 19 lumen low, or 26 lumen green led light. It is waterproof, and from the time I have handled it, it seems pretty robust.

Like last week, all you have to do to enter the drawing is leave a comment below. It has to be something of value, not just a “pick me”, but it is an open thread for any conversations about knives, EDC, hunting, bushcraft, you name it. Start a debate about batoning, your favorite blade steel, or the best dollar for dollar budget folder. Whatever you want. And because we want to spur a back and forth between our readers, up to 5 comments will be considered valid entries. Only Zach and Cmeat, last weekend’s winners, are excluded from the contest. They will be free to win again next week, so get your comments in now 🙂

Looking at the Knife Magazine Events Calendar, there is only one show this weekend – The Tactical Knife Invitational out in Vegas. If you don’t already know you are going, you won’t be, but it is a good excuse to plug the Events Calendar. On it you can find Hammer Ins, Knife Shows, Regional Collectors Club Meetings, and more – all selectable by event type, date, or distance from your home zip code. Check it out if you are so inclined.

Tactical Knife Invitational

Well, that is about all I have tonight. Be well everyone, have a great weekend, and don’t forget to comment early and often.

A big thanks to Browning for donating our prizes.

Clay, do you have a favorite knife you carry when fishing?

I used to switch up all the time when guiding was my primary gig. But it settled on the ESEE PR4 towards the end, and that is what is still on my wading belt.

The mail lady brought me my new CRKT on Valentines Day, thought that was awfully sweet of her. I also traded some records with a friend for a Pro-Tech Godson auto. It’s been a good knife week.

Yep. I would guide spin fishermen from time to time, but I do most of my damage with a bug-rod.

Started in Ohio and PA guiding Steelhead and PA resident trout. Moved to Idaho and guided the Snake while building boats for Hyde and writing for a newspaper. Moved to TN in 2006, and ran my service, Smoky Mountain Gillies from 2007-2018.

Enjoy life – Carry a knife. Be prepared for the unexpected. I suggest that a good fixed blade be paired with a stout walking stick; or a staff like Little John wielded with the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest.( Optimum length about 52-54 inches). Oh, a slipjoint for whittling. Support your custom knifemakers!

How does the 1095 steel hold up in a wet situation like this? Thinking of upgrading to the new ESEE zancudo fixed blade in s35vn?

        Ricky,
When I was a younger man, I preferred using a staff when I was out and about. I’m much older and most of my long hikes are behind me. And round town, a quarter staff draws some odd looks! Even in some of our more “rugged” city parks a staff seems out of place. Anymore, I prefer a a good hickory cane-preferably a stockman’s/livestock cane- when I’m out for a stroll.
Stout, provides some support, a self defense tool that hides in plane sight, and no unwelcome stares!
And your right about having a folding knife with you. A little whittling on a sunny day is a rather pleasant way to pass the time.

I have seen photos of retirees in Florida communities walking their dogs with an old 9-iron as a walking staff. Always makes me smile.

glad i didn’t get a knife for vd day, i know right where she would have delivered it.
how many gulag switchblades can i get for a soviet france record with a particle board jacket held together with yarn, or a big black bulldozer in galvanized sheet metal (signed, albini used to bring in his dirt bike for tune ups so he could destroy the golf course)?
1095 is straight rust but for the coatings you see. keep after it.

I had to stop carrying my 1095 ESEE Izula at work, a fairly wet environment. Even with regular maintenance it would constantly rust.

Jason, are you thinking of picking up one of ESEE’s new s35vn stainless models?

so many steels it makes my head spin, especially the alphanumerabet soup that’s involved, even different names for the same stuff (m390/ 20cv). i’m pretty well sold on 390. d2 is a pain in the ass and i can only get it so sharp, but it’s cheap now and very nearly stainless. something like a bk24 can be beaten up pretty badly and still perform.

SZTAYLOR89, as much as I’d love another ESEE, when I’m able to purchase a new knife, I get excited to handle a new (to me) maker. Lately I’ve been pining over LT Wright.
