Howdy all, it’s time for another installment of the Knife Magazine Weekend Open Thread, everyone’s favorite time of the week.

The Spyderco Bombshell hit the stores recently, and the internet had a field day. Truthfully, it is a fairly robust folder, a sort of pocket Nessmuk. But it is a little goofy looking. Do you have any good names? Kill Dill is among my favorites.

Since we are talking pickles, it leads to a fairly smooth transition to gardening talk.

I canned my 8th-14th pints of salsa this week, and made a run of pickles as well.

How have y’all been? I am holding my breath about my kids’ school restarting. They are slated to go back the first week in August, but I keep reading about school districts getting cold feet and going back to online. If I wanted to homeschool my kids, I would have been homeschooling my kids. What are schools around the country going to do when kids start inevitably dying from regular flu? More kids die in a tragic bus crash than have died of WuFlu.

Otherwise, we have just kept on keeping on. Biking and Hiking represent 75% of our family summer sojourns in a normal year, so it is just a matter of getting creative with the rest.

I am still bummed about Blade Show, though it looks like I may be joining a small group of folks for a couple of days of social-distanced camping since we all had blocked the weekend on our calendars anyway. I hope I can make it.

  1. Oh, by the way, “Jason”, I think “Gerk Dirk” is cool; But, that knife in a kilt????? Also, I read in “Blade” (April 2012, “Forged Fairy Tale Comes True”, by B. R. Hughes) that a “Jason Knight” was instrumental in getting them together. Know him? Hocky

  2. Polly Nation. Oops, that was a dancer in Charleston, SC. I just read in our local farm news that sweet corn needs rain to jump start its pollination. My Silver Queen has tassles (Polly did too) and is forming ears. I got to research this “rain” thing. It sounds like the agri-folks are saying that the “ears” need to be wetted. That’s what “Polly” said to all us submariners! I have almost completed my vintage knife magazine reading through 2012. As an advocate for carbon steel blades, especially 5160, 1095 et al that are “forged to shape”, tough and easily sharpened, I really enjoyed the articles by Joe Szilaski, Ed Fowler and other noted knifemakers. I learned quite a lot about heat treating high carbon steels, i.e. Carbon at 0.6% and up, . I got to talk with “Barney” about cryogenics. That is fascinating! Clay: If I e-mail you a photo of a knife that I own will you post it? Lastly, a few items: Is “Knife” considering adding a knife “forum” to its on-line content? What about on-line ads? Thanks, Hocky

  3. Clay- I just read and re-read the article about your Great-Great-Grandfather. What a great American!! We could use a few like him today. Thank you for sharing. (Now-since this is a knife thread) , did his Bowie knife survive? I think many of your readers would enjoy seeing a photograph of it-if one exists. I’m off to read more about him. Thanks for sharing!

  4. hocky beat me to the pickle specifics, but he left me gurkha gherkin which is where i’m resting my hat. because bread and butter bombshell is not as catchy. ditto for the dull dill.
    me sister sent me daughter a birthday card and chose to enclose a note suggesting little girl should consider a year hiatus from college. something about that state becoming a hotspot of superflu. just remember, if they watch enough msm even your family can go full durr. i looked up iowa death rates, far from spiking like back in may, the under 40yr old terminal percentage rounds up to .0004.

    1. Hockey-I had to open your garden photos in another tab then blow it up! (Old eyes) I found your knife in 3 of the photos! Looks like a reliable friend. Beautiful garden you got there! My first thought seeing the Spyderco was Gherkin! Great minds. But all I could muster was GERK DIRK. And that’s not very clever.

  6. “Knife World”, March 1995, Volume 21, Number 3, has an article on Aubrey G. Barnes, MS-ABS, written by Jim Phillips. Titled as “Falling Waters Forge” the article captures “Barney” spirit as a knifemaker. My favorite line describing him in the piece are attributed to Bill Moran: “He has the soul of an artist”. Check this out in “THE VAULT”. (Hocky note: “Barney” lives about five miles from me here in Washington County, Maryland. I am usually a weekly visitor to his shop. Every visit is a learning experience.) Clay, nice grouping on the garden photos! It made me think of “I am not a robot” because my “garden knife” is in three of the four pictures. Oh, I am envious of your salsa. Would you e-mail me the recipe? How about “GHERKINSAURUS”; The “GHERK” or maybe “GHERKZILLA”. It definitetly has left me with a “picklely” feeling of wonder!   7. Nice to see these gardens I read about.
    I stared a small garden this year for the first time. My kids are young and starting to show more interest in the outdoors, plants, etc and I thought this would be a good way to encourage it, not to mention pass some time and give them some responsibility. Unfortunately, the first round was not very plentiful. Rabbits and bugs got the kale. Reddishes and carrots were planted too closely together needed to be separated – guess I should have done a little reading before throwing a handful of seeds into the ground and hoping they grow something edible.
    I’m looking into what I can grow late in the season. I started some pumpkin seeds inside. Maybe Squash next? I guess we’ll see.
