Howdy folks…

Hope everyone had a good Independence Day weekend. We went up to Ohio for my mother’s birthday. It was the first time I had seen her since Thanksgiving 2019.

My wife and I took the kids to the Cleveland Orchestra for the 4th. A night of patriotic music, fireworks, and a picnic on the lawn.

Not a bad way to spend the evening.

I saved a bunch by leaving the fireworks to the professionals this year.

This weekend is a big one for the American Bladesmith Society. ABS New England Hammer-in.

Since Hocky didn’t want his Boker hat from last week, Cmeat gets his choice of the grey one or the black one. Let me know.

IF, a BIG IF, I were transported back to the Colonial Days around the 1750’s up through American Independence, I would dress like a Roger’s Ranger (French & Indian War); and, one of those “Swamp Fox” patriots led by Frances Marion (The Revolution). I think I would look pretty good . . . ( . . . and hard to see) in mud, bark and leaves! Then again, IF I Could Go Back to 1776, I would have sought duty on the “Turtle” * . . . Once upon a time. *(The “Turtle” was “lost at sea” after the Battle of Fort Lee. Clive Cussler attempted to locate it. A replica is on display at the U.S. Submarine Force Library and Museum at Groton, CT).

  4. Clay: Please understand that I like vintage Boker knives. I own a few Boker Barlows. There is something alluring about that “Tree” . . . I just did not need a hat. I miss Gene Wilder. “Young Frankenstein” was on the TV recently. I laughed for the umpteenth time since I saw it in Seattle in 1975!

    Mark: Your son has a robust mind! You said he was in kindergarten when the “ghost” issue arose. Follow that with “straight” line and “What’s Archimedes?” Forget the math, he’s a natural for comedy . . . in the vein of Jim Gaffigan. How old is he now?

    StuartB: I never understood the “why” behind the bright scarlet uniforms. The discipline of the English soldier in those bygone days of the British Empire was amazing.

    CMEAT: “Arbolito” . . . definition, please.

    Thank you to Vero Engineering for their gracious donations. The ‘Fulcrum’ line impresses me with the design. Those “O-rings” are unique, i.e. bit keepers.

    1. the boker logo is one of a chestnut tree near the original foundry. arbolito is just spanish for tree. factories in germany, canada, u.s., mexico, and later argentina. this latter adpted the term for their products.
      don’t know what’s chinese (or taiwanes) for tree.
      of course, it’s baum in german.
      pretty much the image on the hat you can’t use.

    2. He had a birthday last week. He’s 34, married and living in St Louis.

      As for why wear red coats, I was told that it started around 1500. At the time red was a rather inexpensive dye. So cost savings was part of the Origen. It was also a color on the Union Jack. It was also viewed as a ferocious color, and thought to make the soldiers more aggressive in battle.
      By the 1700’s the color stood out on the battlefield-enabling troops to “see” through all the gun smoke-so British troops weren’t shooting at one another during the confusion of battle.
      I have no idea if any of that is true, but the question was asked on a midterm exam in my Age of Washington class. So there’s that!

  6. Us English (lapsed I know) have only one historical focus just now, which also involves a red uniform ….. and that is beating the Italians tomorrow at Wembley at football (soccer) and braking the curse of failure that has dogged us since 1966. I dream!

  7. Interesting Redcoat picture! 2 of every 7 British guys marched into battle unarmed???
    And a third guy brings a halberd to a gun fight! No wonder they blew the lead.!

    Clay,, it was sure nice of Joseph and Michelle Vero to provide you with such nice things to give away! I went to their website. Interesting looking knives and pry bar/multi tools.

    Related to the electric eel meme-when my son was in kindergarten he would resist going to sleep at night. There was always a shout of “Dad, dad, dad!,” about 10 minutes after lights out. Always asked some question. One of the most memorable,”If there’s no such things a ghosts, why is there the word ghost?”

      1. That same week he asked-half asleep-“why is everything a straight line?” I said that not everything was a straight line. He shook his head to clear the sleep/fog and pointed through the wall, “but the kitchen is a straight line that way. He pointed another direction , “and school is a straight line that way. Why is that?”
        He was 5 and had figured out the shortest path between to points was a straight line. And he wanted to know why.. That’s when I new 1) he was going to be great at math, and 2) I was going to have my hands full!
        I told him we’d discuss Archimedes in the morning.. 10 minutes latter “”Dad, dad, dad”
        “What’s Archimedes?”
