Howdy Y’all. It is Friday and everyone’s favorite meme thread hosted by a knife magazine. In fact, one might even say we are the World’s Greatest meme thread hosted by a knife magazine. The KNIFE Magazine.

Not much more related to this week’s title, but the lede was my favorite meme of the week. There are a bunch of current event memes, but not enough to be a theme.

I have seen sub $1 gas in my lifetime, but not for long. None of us have seen gas like this.

 

Speaking of abusive relationships, the biggest memeworthy event going on right now is the whole Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial.

I won’t share too many. The whole situation has me rooting for a fissure to open in the earth and swallow the courthouse.

  2. Pre-lawn mowing moment for the “WOT”: My meme likes – “Tupperware” and “Stop Sign et al”. I understand both of them. I do not “know” anything about “Florida Man”; therefore, I am going with “Australian Creatures”, e.g. playpi (. . . pusses?) can kill you. Regarding mower blades, I replaced the 21-incher on my push-“Snapper”. As usual, I look at “used steel” as a future edged-tool. I am thinking of making “something” . . . the blade throws sparks off my grinder (carbon). Nothing fancy in my mind; Just hammer it flat, profile it and grind it. No need to harden.

    “Moran Foundation” update: We bought a bunch of Emerson 150-lb anvils and stands for the new knife academy. Interior work is going strong. The Board of Directors (BOD) is considering the “Grand Opening (GO)” date. Possibly, the “GO” and the “Annual All-Forged Knife Show” will happen in the autumn.     2. The mowing is hilarious, can’t wait to hear about your mower blade transformation! Should make a great knife, have so many people wanting to gift me planer blades, beautiful steel, but so much work ! I will check out that internet link to the Moran Museum & Foundation.   3. Clay, I hope your drive goes smooth. Not sure I’d trust a taco bell pizza to stay in my gut on a long car ride. Perhaps pack a tupperware popcorn puke bowl for emergencies.

    2. i envision t. bell pizza coming out of a caulk gun, like their sour cream and ground beef.
      eating pizza out side any of the major ‘za hubs can be very adventurous. when i’m on the road i’ll hit the hut; wouldn’t dream of it locally, but at least it will resemble food if you find yourself remote.
      little girl had spring commencement last week. for a celebratory dinner we visited johnny’s italian steakhouse. ames, iowa… they did beef pretty well, a humorous attempt at upscale but options were limited. the worst lasagna ever, better than oncore, not as good as stouffer’s, neither of which are any good. cardboard pasta, dry cheese, a can of unseasoned stewed tomat dumped on top.
      no way to get a seat at cafe beaudelaire, line out the door. brazilian chow, introduced me to the dish feijoada, a black bean stew with nine kinds of meat slow cooked.

  4. Love the Knife Magazine logo, some of these memes are spot on, just hilarious, needed a laugh this week. I need that cold one now Hocky! Can’t wait to hear how your day went? Congrats Mark R on getting drawn. Stuart B – I am really interested to see how you like that new knife after using it, I had the same reaction as you when you first saw it. Thought I was missing something, at the same time Clay knows his outdoor blades and he did some serious testing. Hope everyone is having a great weekend, off to fire up the 103 CI motor – Summer is knocking at the door, I hope!

I spent a few hours on the Dicerox today; trimming the handle screws that were almost 1/8″ too long on the front and 1/16″ on the rear so they would not hold flush to the scales or even tighten, it seems it was just glue that was stopping them from breaking loose Then that monster bevel, its a very sloppy grind set at about 25 deg! Given it’s such a super steel I am surprised its not more like 20 deg or less, and taking it down to that angle would be a monster effort. Currently its a kinda Skandi/Saber/Pry Bar grind, with a diminutive handle. I am still left wandering?

      1. Appreciate the update, the company has ditched the screws in favor of permanent pins, I see why. To take it down you would just flat grind right to the top, but the intent of that grind might have been for some hard use, banging with something to chop through wood or maybe bone busting through the brisket?

        1. DC – I doubt my worksharp could make much of a dent in the Vanex, its tough stuff. The screws are fine as they allow you to swap out the scales, they just need sizing!
          It will be interesting to see what the winner thinks of the shorter version. To me, that grind makes even less sense for a small EDC, seems better suited to a larger chopper type knife than the Largertha. But hey: ‘mouth’ … ‘gift horse’ …. etc.

          1. Always good to tell it like it is Stuart, I did like the looks of the shorter model thinking it would be great for cooking and other chores around camp. If you end up winning that version will watch for the review!

          2. Thanks for the sharing your first thoughts. It seems like an unusual knife for sure, though I would be more than happy to try one out for myself.

          3. Jason – see how you get on with the draw for the short version. If not we could sort out a trade? I have tidied it up but held off on getting stuck into a regrind.

  6. Nice group of chip holders to be included with! Thanks Clay! It lifted my spirits immensely!
    I’ve been sick all week with a sinus infection (really-2 negative Covid tests). It’s weird. It put me on my backside. Luckily, better living through chemistry and some good antibiotics have turned things around.! Still have very little reserve energy. So harvesting onions took a little longer, and I was gasses afterwards. Got them all hung up to dry today.
    CMEAT- my kids were raised on Disney classic cartoon musicals and some other things. The Music Man for some reason was a favorite! You got trouble!

    1. we were second hand shopping for a twin perambulator when i spotted the entire vhs set of bullwinkle on a shelf. yoink! i learned that natasha’s last name is fatale and the kids learned the phrase, “because you are a big, ugly shnook!”
      also grabbed a public domain dvd of many red skelton shows. reminded me of dad walking around singing “the foggy, foggy dew.”
      more important were the shows that were not allowed. no barney. no wiggles. no dorka the explorka. no bob the builder (one of the vehicles was too damn whiny and was escared of the dark).
      of course, pee wee’s playhouse was a hit.

      1. Bullwinkle is the best. Did you know the narrator was William Conrad? Later of Cannon- early to mid 70’s deceive show..
        Did the set come with any Fractured Fairy Tails?

        1. oh my goodness, how did that escape me. a voice familiar enough, but i never placed it. (just guessing that detective somehow became deceive, eh?) he did have a great voice, right up there with ken nordine. we used to see ken at ‘hawks games at the old stadium. we’d goad him into saying, “cold steel on ice.” neighborhood guy, had his recording studio in his building. check out “word jazz” for a taste of his weird genius.
          the box set was complete, the tale of the girl who craved rampion is my favorite. with a little effort we were able to find programs that entertained us all. bullwinkle made the kids laugh even though it was mostly over their heads. it’s still relevant somehow; aired originally prime time same like flintstones. for some reason the indigenous people of dubais do not see humor in the flintstones. but the ones in abu dhabi do.

  7. Nice to come home to a new knife. The Dicerox Legartha was on my desk when I got back from Blighty – thanks Clay. That said, my first impressions were similar to the reaction I had from your review, and to me it just seems ‘weird and odd’, maybe I just don’t get the concept, especially for such a high-end priced knife? But lets see if a bit more time with it will smooth out the quirks and/or the QA issues?

  8. when i have enough time to watch a movie i run out of time before i select one from a list. which is to say i miss video adventure. have never done redbox. (mos def/ j. black). those were good years with the kids. they were raised on zombie stuff. one ultra karen asian lad employee chastised me when he saw what my six year old daughter was perusing.
    “your mom” varied by neighborhood. some areas would bludgeon you, others laughed it off. we were open season, hurling the most horrible detailed scenarios at one another. know your audience.
    my brain still silently recites it at the most inappropriate moments.
    having tourettes is more fun than not having it. deuce bigalow.
