Howdy folks. You did it. You made it through to Friday and it is Weekend Open Thread time. More entertaining than a low speed Bronco chase.

It may be a bit crass for some, but the internet wasted no time in firing up the meme machine.

I remember the first one…

I feel badly for the Goldman and Brown families, as their children were the victims in the case.

But OJ is a fair target, deceased or not.

Very ironic indeed.

 

It would be a missed opportunity.

The Bronco will forever be associated with OJ.

I am going to skip the music selection tonight in favor of something topical. Norm MacDonald had some legendary jokes about OJ. OJ might have left behind a complicated legacy, but everyone loves Norm.

I am recording the Buckeye’s Spring game to watch when I get home from lacrosse tomorrow.

Next up is a Civivi Praxis.  They sent it, and a new Starflare to us last week.

I really like it.  Fits my hand well. I was considering keeping it, but Katie wanted to keep the Starflare, so I feel like we need to give at least one of them away. I might do a mini-review before sending it out.

I fear for humanity.

As I have every week since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, I am taking a moment to voice my support for our ally, and the only liberal Democracy in the Middle East.

 

Israel is held to an impossible standard. They were attacked by “people” who literally are calling for Genocide. If Israel were not trying to protect civilians, they could have reduced the entirety of Gaza to rubble. They don’t because that would be immoral.

The hypocrisy is staggering.

It is Israel’s fault, of course.

I really do feel like the world is upside down.

  2. “Round-a-Bouts” . . . I did a stint with the MD State Highway Administration (“MDSHA”) from 1995-1997. My supervisor LOVED ’roundabouts’ . . . He was a “traffic engineer”. He assumed that drivers understood words like “courtesy”, “yield”, etc. etc. Washington County, Maryland is a testing ground for these “circles of frustration”. A few drivers occupied with distractions just drive straight across them . . . shortest distance is a straight line; as the crow flies; point A to point B . . . that sort of thing.

    1. Hocky – sorry to say they may just be another British invention of the 50s, although the historic first use is often linked to Washington DC in the 1790s by some French Jonny. If you think of them as more of a chicane, they are way more fun.

I sold a whole bunch of “Not-In-A-Box” folders and s-ip-joints” (GERBER, Buck, OKC); plus, a few “pawn shop” fixed blades: “KaBar” kukri; “PAL” WW2 era survival knife; A “Knives of Alaska” ulu (MIB); “KaBar” 1250 (MIB) at the “Int’l B-B-Q and Outdoor Show” on Saturday. The “Moran Foundation” set up an exhibit and provided “live” forging by Robert Stumphy and other knife makers. The wind was gusting up to 30 MPH which made keeping sharp blades from flying through the air a challenge! We were the only “knife people” and a steady crowd visited our tables. Live music on the “Ag Center” pasture was complemented by a haze of aromatic pot smoke . . . “Woodstock 2024”. Was that “Joe Cocker”??

    The peddler bag is now much “lighter”. It will go to “King’s Bay Submarine Base” with me on April 25th for the “USS George Bancroft SSBN643 – Association” event at the “Bancroft Sail” memorial near the entrance to the submarine base.

    “Farts in a Submarine”. Fact: A Franklin-class SSBN (aka “Boomer”) is an oblong vessel about 425 feet in length and about 30 feet in diameter. A BIG cylinder. Calculating the volume of a cylinder: V=”pi x r(squared) x height”. Calculating the volume of a “fart” will vary depending on duration . . . other “factors” may impact an estimation. So, the boat goes out to sea to the 100-fathom mark and “Dives!” The patrol has begun . . The “atmosphere” on the boat is continuously “refreshed” by carbon dioxide scrubbers, carbon monoxide burners, Oxygen generators and filtered by HEPAs; BUTT, . . . after about two weeks underwater the “original” air in the boat is now about 100% recycled fart with traces of turbine oil, human “odors”, cigarette residue et al.
    There are zero “windows” on a submarine. On occasion, the boat’s Captain will “ventilate” the boat via the Main Induction Fan. The resulting difference in the air quality is remarkable. After a normal patrol of 75 days underwater, we “Surface” at the spot that we dove (The “Russian” spy trawlers think we just sat on the bottom, AAarrgh!).
    (Note: A submariner’s clothing can NEVER be rid of the smell embedded in their clothing.)

    1. You can only imagine how bad it was on those long Pacific patrols back in WW2.
      Hey Hocky, did you carry a knife on board, if so what type was it?

      1. “Buck 112″(aka “Ranger”). Bought at the “Navy Exchange”, Great Lakes Naval Training Center in 1973. Most of the sailors went for the “110”. The “Ranger” appealed to me. As a “Machinist Mate”, I cut a lot of gaskets and valve packing with it. It’s shorter blade (verse the “110”) worked well for me. Ironically, I did not like the “hollow grind”. To this day, I do not own a “hollow grind” blade. The “Ranger” was on my belt for nearly nine years from 1973 until 1982. I engraved it in 1978 after my tour of duty on the USS George Bancroft SSBN643. Carried it to Ballston Spa, NY (Nuclear Power Prototype Facility-Instructor); then, to the submarine base at Groton, CT (Shop 38N: Nuclear Repair). I kept it clean and the edge was always keen. It is retired to my “Navy drawer”. Clay has a photo of it somewhere in his “Hocky” archives.

        Re WW2, the diesel boats “ran on the surface” much of the time. Battery power when submerged. Most of the boats were homeported in Pearl Harbor, so those patrols to Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia and China covered thousands of miles. Fortunately there were safe ports of call in many of those arenas. The significant obstacle to a diesel boat staying at sea was fresh water and food.

        Re the “atmosphere” on a WW2 submarine, . . . I reckon that it would become “foul” should the boat have to stay submerged for very long.

        1. i carried a 112 for almost the exact time frame you mentioned. the belt sheath was worn through to the bolster from being dragged while “skitching” one winter. hollow grinds are not my fave, but what i grew to dislike was the upswept tip on clip points. the 112 is less pronounced than the 110. my dad bought an esquire and i started with drops afters. wonder if my moms gots that…
          the glenview naval air base is now a development called “the glen,” starter castles, townhomes, condos, retail. as a kid we rode dirt bikes and snowmobobbles on that poppity, and carried shotties for pheasant.

        3. I had to mention the “Hollow Grind” comment Hocky because there is a chance with NHL Playoff 1rst round opponents being announced shortly that Vancouver may meet Nashville?

          If so we might consider flat grinding a blade for a rematch if you are interested. Will give you first crack once we know who Vancouver plays?

          1. Del: I know zilch about professional hockey. Perhaps, we may have a rematch with MLB? Of course, the “Ravens” should be in the playoffs this year. Unfortunately, a large number of “Chiefs” players may not play this year due to being in jail; or, having to take an Uber to the stadium.

        4. MLB rematch sounds better Hocky! See how those Blue Jays make out this season!

          Not final who Vancouver is even playing yet, 78 percent chance it will be Nashville, but we will know soon?

        1. Del – I read a lot of WW2 military History and am always so amazed as what people went through, or put up with for the Effort. Especially when compared to todays lack of (lower case ‘e’) effort. OK Boomer, I know. Maybe I’m equally staggered by the thought of carrying one knife for over 9 years!
          Hocky – hat’s off to you for your service, especially one so intimately linked to all those busy nuclei.

          1. The sacrifice for those who served, as well as those who changed their lives to serve in other ways by working for companies that built equipment to fight, etc. is mind boggling. Watching docs of the ships leaving Newfoundland bound for England running that gauntlet in the WWs, yikes!

            I so admire Hocky for serving in those tiny subs!

          2. “Ranger” was the belt knife. Yep, nine years. Interesting factoid: The “112” debut was around 1968 and the blade did not have a “nail nick”. My “Ranger” does not have this “pull” which created a need for a secure grip on the blade spine. In the oil-permeated atmosphere of the Engine Room, opening the blade required me to “roughen” the tips of my index finger and thumb. Later “112’s have a nail nick.

            “Busy nuclei”, LOL. Only the neutrons were busy. The fast ones and the slow ones. Reactor theory: Slow neutrons sustain the nuclear reaction known as fission. Fast neutrons are “slowed” by collisions with the primary coolant (aka water). I am considering buying a “TRM” Neutron. I like it more than their “Atom” . . . and that is my segue to “Boomer” of “Sha-Na-Na”, OOPs, that was “Bowser”. I am out of here!

    1. Zach-For a long time my father was the youngest graduate from Notre Dame. He went in at 15, graduated at 18. If the Irish were on tv for any sport, the game was on and the entire family was watching. The one and only time I ever heard my mother swear was when a ref blew a call during a UCLA basketball game. So I’m with Clay on my views of Michigan! (But Michigan pales in comparison to southern cal).

      our solipse was 94%, american scientific surplus (place has been around forever) had shades rated for 100% uv rads block. i was surprised they existed, was always told you can’t look directly, pinhole box etc. wifey was thrilled i came up with a couple. park, hiball, good time.

      at the intersection of that 17 wish genie joke and norm mcdonald, maybe clay can find and post him telling his pumpkinhead/ genie shaggy dog bit. only norm.
      that upshot of jerry makes his shoulder look like a coat hanger. his last performance was at soldier field, a slow, meandering sleepy performance by them. i attended with my boss who closed our kawasloppy shop that year. i’d probably still be there.

    And after seeing the constant news on OJ we were sort of anticipating something on the subject Clay. Some funny ones for sure, agree about the toll on the families for sure.

    Hope Mark has a blast in Oregon, supposed to be a great show!

    I did have a Bronco II once, was at a lake fly fishing for trout one Spring. Suddenly saw about 8 horses milling around the vehicle. Looked like they were licking the vehicle.

    They were,with their teeth! Huge teeth marks all over the silver and black paint, 3 windows scratched too. Must have been road salt from the winter or something in the paint?

    Insurance company wrote repairs for about 3K. Couldn’t believe they believed me, but the appraiser said he had seen this before.

      1. It was at Douglas Lake Ranch Cmeat, mostly working cowboy stock. It was bizarre, to say the least. Little Sabin Lake was where the ambush occurred. 🙂

        I told the insurance that the window scratches didn’t matter, so the cut me a check for a portion of what that would have cost.

        They did have some high value cutting horses, but those stayed mostly in Texas.

        Peppy San was the big name cutting horse when we lived there in the mid-1980s.

        1. i’m reading cutters are mostly quarters trained to isolate single cattle from their herd. high profile champs get more billing than the riders?
          me brudder (glenmore, pa.) first had thoughrobreds when i was a kid, later he acquired quarters, then he got into tennessee walkers. he stopped riding years ago and back when he was in his eighties i asked him why he bothers to throw hay and shovel manure. “i like the way they look in the pasture while i’m drinking my morning coffee.”
          eventually he wound up with a few miniatures, and now ninety i asked over coffee, “when you look out over the field now, do the horses seem farther away?” that made him cranky.
          the trip to my yoopers property near escanaba was to include a side run to bark river knives, some 20min from his house. alas, it will be a solo trip as last monday night he passed from a stroke while working in upstate new york. crap.

          3. Save that picture in your head of “horses in the pasture while drinking coffee”. Unexpected loss of someone that is dear to you is a tough reality. “Throwing hay and shoveling manure.” That is worth framing!
