Howdy Folks.

Apologies for no Open Thread last weekend. My time was spent pulling together the Black Friday thread. I hope y’all found it useful. Did anyone buy any steel for yourself or others?

As Bill Murray says, “It’s Groundhog Day, again”.

I definitely am beyond caring. Personally, I am of the opinion that a breakthrough might be in my best interest while I still am in the “protected from serious illness and hospitalization” stage. Toss in a little natural immunity, and I can really put this crap behind me.

Newman gives me the creeps. But the meme is on point.

Press Day was this week, and thus I am behind on shipping out knives and the like. Apologies to those that are owed prizes. I sucked. My newsfeed was a little sparser this week as well. In fairness, that wasn’t completely my fault. There are not a lot of releases at the moment, and therefore fewer posts to share as well.

Knife Shows don’t suck, but they have wound down for the year. Nothing on the Events Calendar until January. But Knife Rights “Knives Live” is going on as I write this. Bearded Gear is on right now.

As I said, I have a couple of Gerbers I still need to send out. But I promise to get that cleared from the To Do list Monday.

Added to the winners is Hocky, who has a Case XXX hat coming his way from the contest the week before last. For Our next prize we have a Spartan Knives folder. I forgot to grab it when I was in the office on Thursday. It will be a “multiple draw” contest again, with the winner needing to be drawn twice over the coming month. I will post a photo (and name) of the knife Monday morning.

  1. CMEAT, I hope to meet you someday. Re “Jane”, her “carrying style” was a bit high on the hip . . . most likely, it was a “tuckitin”. My all-time favorite Tarzan flick: “Tarzan and his Mate”. The underwater scenes of Johnny and Maureen were censored. Sadly, Cheetah gets run over by a rhino.

  2. “Tarzan”. . . Turner Classic Movies (TCM) showed a Johnny Weissmuller film fest this week: “Tarzan Finds a Son (1939)”; “Tarzan’s Secret Treasure (1941) and “Tarzan’s New York Adventure” (1942). Classic “lord of the jungle” flicks that I absorbed as a kid on Mom and Dad’s “Philco” black and white TV. Now that I am a bit older, I “look” for the knives carried by the actors. Tarzan appears to use a sub-hilt with a eight inch blade (maybe less). He rides a rhino to save “Boy”; ultimately killing it with multiple plunges to the beast’s right shoulder. (Question: Who made a sub-hilt in the ’30s?) “Jane” (Maureen O’Sullivan) has a waist-strap-on that looks good on her fashionable loincloth . . . “Boy” has a handmade-looking knife which he throws at a lion when he is “up a tree”. “Hey, “Boy!” didn’t you learn NOT to throw your knife?” Also, one of the “great white hunters” stabs his single-blade Barlow (?) into a tree. It might be a Remington . . . It had a “bail” on it. Thanks “TCM”.

      as a kid we had weissmuller and dobby burton for dinner one night. pops was a first aid/ small craft/ lifesaving/ swimming/ diving instructor for rose kreuz, and they were swimmers and divers respectively.
      far more importantly, pops had all of the edgar rice burroughs dime novels; tarzan, pellucidar. was john carter of mars the same author?

  3. Flotsam and jetsam . . . I watched the new opener of “FIF” this past Wednesday. Make a damascus hatchet??? I enjoy this show for its value-added education, e.g. “cold shuts” and “fish lips” and how to avoid them. Watching the frustration of the contestants to make “cannister damascus” from fish hooks, ball bearings, mild steel and steel dust in thimble-sized cans and now round pipe is difficult to view. During the build-up to this season premiere, I watch the “Armed Services” competition that was titled, “Redeployment”. All four of the service branches were represented. Each person crafted a Ka-Bar. The test for “toughness” was banging their knives on a torpedo. Who does that in the real world?

      1. No biggie, Clay. You had me “looking” though! Maybe, it is time for “Case” to add another “X” . . . Re the “Spartan Blade” folder you mentioned for the “WOT” drawing over the next two weeks, you promised a photo . . . I am a huge fan of “Spartan”. Their merger with “Ka-bar” (2019) and creation of “Pineland Cutlery” opens the door for many more people to own a “Spartan” knife. The really great thing about this merger is that “Ka-bar” and “Spartan Blades” are producing their “Gold, Silver and Bronze” knives in America (Gold and Silver); and, “Bronze” are produced in “countries friendly to the USA” i.e. Italy, Germany and Taiwan. My “Kranos” (bought at 2017 Blade Show) is a every now-and-then carry. it is an impressive folder! Curt Iovito gave me a “Spartan Blade” challenge coin with my purchase as well as several other “Spartan” accessories. Great people at “Spartan Blades”! Navy vs. Army on now . . .

  4. “Case XXX”? I have a small collection of vintage Case slipjoints. I don’t spend much time looking at “newer” Case knives. I reckon I will take a look at the Case website to see what “Case XXX” means. It’s the least I can do for accepting the “hat”. On the memes I vote for “Salma” . . . Oh, “Spartan Blades” is an outstanding, veteran-owned company. I own a “Kranos”. On upcoming events, I am considering going to the “Gator Show” in Lakeland, Florida in January. My in-laws live in Brandon (near Tampa). Short drive north and I will be in the wide, wide world of knives! . . . “Knife World”, “Houston Price”, December 29, 2014: Rest Peacefully.

  5. frightening to think that the next prez inauguration will not be until 2025. i hope this current doof gets lame ducked.
    how’s this for apropo? an anagram of omicron is moronic.
    i had the friendliest little cold over the weekend.
    we had mid 30’s and rain all day sunday so only the stoutest lads rode the toy parade; i was not among them.
    enjoyed a couple bloody bulls yesterday, same as mary with beef consomme added. dropped in some skrimps, hot pickled asparagus, hot pickle and a big ol’ celery stalk. i am fortunate that that indulgence did not trigger any arthritic inflammation; skrimp an’ ‘sparagus heavy purine food.

    1. My Missus (bless her cotton socks) bought me a Work sharp knife and tool sharpener Mk. 2, similar to the Ken Onion with a little less angle control. Its my first belt sharpener and so far I have learned that with power tools you can mess up a blade way faster than with hand tools! It’s a learning curve, but its pretty slick.

      1. I had the work sharp ken onion for a bit. I just couldn’t get consistent results. And he’s, it can mess up a blade very quickly.

  7. Instead of her usual pecan pie recipe handed down from at least her grand mother, she went with one she saw on the Pioneer Woman on the Food Network.
    The biggest difference is the pie crust. Just different than the usual standard recipe she normally uses. Almost the same, but better.
    The “pie guts”(my phrase) were almost identical. Maybe a little more of this a little less if that, The crust made a world of difference. And the very slight differences in the measurements of the other ingredients seemed to make an already great pie better. It also made a little bit thicker pie than usual. So the was more pie to crust ratio if that makes sense.

    1. Thanksgiving was great! Spent it with my wife’s side of the family. Only 18 of us this year. (We’re generally in the low to mid 20s). My wife is a fabulous baker! Her 3 sisters are all very good as well. She found a pecan pie recipe a few years ago that took an already great pie to the stratosphere! There were several different pies, as well as a cake and home made.brownies as well. I’m still full!
      Only new steel purchases were some SAK Classics. Purchased for stocking stuffers. Our 3 kids-all married-will be here for Christmas. We haven’t seen our middle daughter since mid-March of 2020. She’s in California and works in a hospital there. Christmas will be great! Speaking of….I’m off to a few local Holiday “marts” in search of whatever may be fun to put under the tree!

      1. We only had myself, my wife, and 2 year old daughter this year some we kept it easy and did instant potatoes, instant stuffing and frozen veggies. What’s the secret to the pecan pie Mark?
