Howdy all…

This week was a bit of a blur. The only reason I knew what day it was was because it was Press Day on Wednesday. July’s issue is “in the can”. I know that the newsfeed was a bit sparse this week, I ended up doing my last interview for my 3rd installment on WuFlu’s effects on the knife industry Tuesday afternoon. Watching this play out has been interesting. It started with a side-bar on Covid in our March issue. Then a whole page in Knife News, then finally a 4 page article as the industry reopens. It was nice to do actual “journalisming” instead of just reblogging stuff.

It is pretty depressing that a week later, there are still riots and vandalism. I think Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) summed it up best:

Everyone is pretty much in agreement, it was a pointless killing of a person who at the time was presenting no threat or resistance. The cops have all been charged. What are we doing now? My sympathy level is rapidly flagging.

On the positive side, the Gun Control movement has been set back a decade at least. Thanks to heroes like this…

So last week was our final week of CRKT sponsorship of our Weekend Open Threads. I have feelers out to several companies, but the wheels are turning slowly these days. Right now, it looks like Artisan Cutlery might be coming through for us first.

We do have some random knives lying around the office. Including this “One Arm Tall Boy” from Fight’n Rooster.

  3. My grandfather (born in 1878) told me that this shaped blade was called a “one armed man” knife. He said they were very popular with civil war vets, many of whom had lost a hand or arm during the war. He had a friend who used the sole of his shoe to catch the hook to open the knife! Does anyone know how old this blade pattern is?

    1. Seems like a reasonable explanation Mark. Does anyone know when thumbstuds started appearing? Was it before or after Spyderco introduced their round hole opener?

      1. Well I spent some time researching thumb studs. Seems there was a a device called the Flickit that you could apply to you blade circa 1980. I couldn’t find a definitive date/person/company to credit with being the first to incorporate a thumb stud. The internet consensus is the Spyderco hole predates thumb studs.

        1. it would be close. i remember those flickits attached to buck folders; they would sell at bikey swap meets. the spydies first knives were probably around ’80 give or take; i have a case linerlock with redbone scales that has studs. early eighties for sure.

        2. That is what we are coming up with on this end. I asked Mark, and he immediately thought of the flick it, and I remembered seeing them growing up.

          Nothing comes to mind as far as true thumb studs earlier than a Spydie hole.

    2. There is some debate as to whether they were “intentionally” made before the civil war. I’ve read that they might have originated as a knife with a broken tip that one would continue to use. Either born out of necessity or, “i’m broke and so is my knife”. There is also tales of sunken steamboats that claim to have had pre civil war One armed knives on board.

  5. I’ve always really liked Fight’n Rooster/Frank Buster knives. I’ve never seen this run of One Arm Tall Boys. Been a lousy week. Covid is tearing through all the orchard labor camps here, 400% increase yesterday. Rioters from Portland came to visit, they were met with a community that looks out for their neighbors and left. That being said, I broke down and got myself a pick me up. Yesterday my new Bradford Guardian 3 in M390 arrived. Onto wildfire season.

    1. bradford has some really nice blade shapes; not a tanto guy, but the drops, sheeps and wharns are looking good. fair pricing for some good steels too, and wa made.
      thanks for al the tuna, i am grateful to my albacore.
      chicago burnt, masks everywhere (i always had a snot rag in pocket, but bandit was never an approved look) and there are odd things about.
      one of our finests cruisers has made two passes down the alley where the garage congregation assembles, so a lovely neighbor is concerned. the van largely obscures the view; they don’t even slow.

  7. All I need for Bingo is for the Yellowstone superwoman to erupt! Comet collision would give Bingo both vertically and horizontally! I generally prefer slip joints as pocket .knives. I live in the burbs, work inside. Slip joints tend to draw “oo’s and ahhhs”. People just seem to like them! My father and grandfather taught me knife safety and I just don’t overly worry about the knife closing on my fingers. This one is pretty!
    She’d make a fine “Sunday go to meetin'”knife.
