Howdy folks,

Hope everyone is alright.  A year ago today was the last day my kids had school for the year. Thankfully, they went back this fall, though my daughter caught an asymptomatic case of the WuFlu last month. We are all fine. If anyone else caught it in our household, it was asymptomatic.

Finally getting caught up at work. As you can see, I managed to get several “Above the Fold” posts out this week, and a reasonable news feed selection.

This could be the story of my life.

Primus is the winner of the Browning Primal folder from last week.  I forgot to grab a knife today when I was in the office, so this week’s prize will be the winner’s choice of a KNIFE Magazine backissue. Obviously this is going to be subject to availability, but I think we have enough copies of everything but the Ruana issue and the Yellowhorse issue. You can see all the covers here, or read the whole things if you are a Premium Online Member.

  1. OOPs! The Moran Foundation is getting together on Saturday, March 27th at the Moran Forge in MIddletown, Maryland. The weather is forecast to be cool, brisk and sunny. All great adjectives for knives, too! Hocky

  2. Good Monday to All: Thanks for the congratulations! My son has realized that newborns only do a couple of things: Nurse, poop and pee. Tomato, pickles and peppers . . . I, too, am ready for the planting to begin. I spread about 2 tons of mulch in my flower beds and garden areas last week. Captured the seeds from my wife’s coneflowers and mums . . . working the compost piles. Ain’t nothing smells as good as compost except the farmers manure! I am keeping an eye on the knife world happenings . . . The Moran Foundation is having an “all hands” meeting on March 28th at “Bill’s Forge” in Middletown. It will be nice to have “show and tell” and “shoot the sh_ _” with everyone who shows up. CMEAT: Good advice re “pthalides” . . . I will carve a “teething knife” from a piece of curly ash (ASH . . .Axel Silas Hockensmith). Del: I will bring some cigars to BC. Need another half-ton of mulch. Hocky

  3. Pops-congratulations! It’s a wonderful thing to become a grand parent! I wish you and yours many years of happiness! I think a teething knife photo might just make it past the editor!!!

    Clay- happy that you and yours are well an none the worse for wear. As usual, the memes made me smile! One year ago today was the last “in person” day I worked. So much for “2 weeks to flatten the curve!”. At least working from home eased the transition to retirement!

    Heading outside to start veggie garden prep. Cutting WAY back on the number of tomato plants this year. We ended last year north of 75 pounds- and my lovely wife wants to cut back on canning tomatoes-and increase pickle production this year. Wish me luck.

      1. CMEAT- Thanks! She loves pickles. Me, not so much. My brothers-in-law and nephews really enjoy her okra pickles.
        I just enjoy digging in the dirt and watching things grow. esp tomatoes

        1. the only thing better than a claussen is one out of the big barrel like at a good deli. but my gal grew up with “half sour” so when i see those…
          there used to be a restaurant called the pickle barrel. there was a mini barrel on every table.
          why do squirrels take one bite out of each tomatoe. my tree rat vendetta is currently at a truce. a tomatoe is a good test for a sharp edge.
          i find chiles very rewarding to grow, i.e., good yield, low effort. my fave chile manzana originates from high altitudes (peru?) so hard to grow in the heat, even harder as i can’t get the seeds to germinate. habanero on the other hand, bountiful. makes killer hot sauce and dried pods go in the grinder (pestle) with other seeds for stews, rubs and brines.
          let’s see if i can get chile pequin (chiltepin) to sprout.
          recently discovered knifesilo. good prices, they even have some raffir noble chaps left.

  4. All my “Knife” friends and compatriots, Axel Silas Hockensmith entered the world on Friday, March 12, 2021. Weighing 7.3 lbs; and “in the plank position” a little bit under 21 inches tall, “*Axe” is healthy and his Mom, and my Son, are ecstatic. (*I had little influence on my grandson’s name. I did offer “Wharn”, “Clip”, “Bowie”, “Steel”, “Kabar”, “Skinner”, “Hunter”, “5160” (Unusual, right?) and “Knifr” and “Seax” (I really liked this name). So, I have a friend with a 3-D printer and we are working on creating a “teething knife” . . . in the meantime, I am a proud “Pop Hocky” or just “Pops”.

      Beautiful name.
      I actually know a guy with the middle name Steel. I would have fully supported 5160.
      Thanks Clay and Knife Magazine for the new blade. I’ll put it to good use at a camping weekend coming up.
      Spring is coming. I look forward to sometime in my small garden plot.
      Hard to believe it’s been 1 year since this all started.

    4. Hocky – full congrats on the new sprog. “Rex” might have been a good middle name, with or without the 121.
      Late to comment here, just back from a great tour of Death Valley in the Jeep, avoiding crowds and enjoying the vastness. Dropped in on Charles Manson’s old ranch up in the Panamint range amongst other trails. So nice to get away from the madness even if just for a few days
