Howdy folks.  This week’s theme was inspired by Hocky’s comment that the Spyderco Matriarch 2 needs “more serrations”. And a meme was born…

Hopefully most of you get the reference. I had to explain this one to Cmeat. It is my favorite meme of the week…

A bit too much going on in that one. And the reference is more than 20 years old.

So how is everyone doing? Did you have a good Halloween? We were at the lacrosse tournament until late Sunday, and missed trick or treating. But I am proud of my girls.

So, speaking of shipping things, I have been a slacker.  And I have been laid up this week with a post-injection complication from a PRP treatment I had done to my knee. I am still on crutches. I didn’t even make it into the office on Press Day. I still need to ship the Vero and the Gerber Pry. Sorry.

Hocky is the winner of this week’s drawing. The Gerber Lockdown Pry is taken, but the Drive is available. I am guessing he would pass on either knife. Call it an educated hunch.

  3. Whew! You “WOTers” have been busy in all aspects of living. First and foremost, I definitely choose the “Lockdown Drive”. It appears to be useful. Thank you for selecting me, Clay; or, the “AI” that runs the random number generator. Oh, your Browns walloped the Bengals. “Chubb” is back. Helluva ballplayer! Re this weeks “memes”, the “Toilet Paper Math” is spot on with the everyday consumer trying to find the best deal. Jethro Bodine could spend hours “ciphering” it out . . . MARKR does a decent job however, “What about the plies?”. Single ply or double ply? Embossed or not? (Think texture . . . like G10 scales, . . . Ahh-hh-hh).

    Kudos to the “Knife” staff for an outstanding November issue. From “Bubba” Crouch on the cover, and; the article within giving the slipjoint its due; to the “Moran Foundation” construction of its knifemaker’s school; to the CKRT “Stylus” review by Frank S. Karl (Note: This review provided all the technical data required for me to consider this knife for purchase.) An important element of his writing was the improvement of “12C27” to produce “12C327”. Improved grain refinement and smaller well-dispersed carbides resulted. ). His comment, “Steel may be the heart of a knife, but the soul of a blade belongs to heat treatment.” will be on my workshop wall. “Karl”‘s humor and wit shine through in the article, too. So, “Field Trial” by M. Willson Offutt IV, on the “Diamond Blade Commander Auto” is, in my opinion, one of his better articles. Why? I sensed that he wrote it while he was out with his horses and using the knife. Sometimes, Mr. Offutt’s reviews leave me with a feeling of “So What?” about a knife. Not this time, and his “Conclusion” includes a shot at Mainland China, “Quality is uniform without the quirks or deficiencies found in knives made in China.” Bruce Volyles provides an emotional connection to knife days of yore in his “Bruce on the Loose”; and, his “Edgewise” piece, “Initialed Makers”, speaks directly to knifemaker’s to “. . . put their pride of workmanship on their knives”: Name and Place of Origin at a minimum. Well done, Bruce, on both of your articles.

    1. As, c’mon, Hocky! I was simply translating marketing phrases into numbers! Nobody said nothin’ bout quilting, embossing, softness or splinter count! Simply answering the question about the numbers of squares! I’d need more information to address your additional concerns! Probably a meme for another day!

      1. My apology, Mark. Your math skills are not in question. I buy the Sam’s Club TP when it is in stock: 45 Rolls, 235 2-Ply sheets per roll: Sheet Size is 4″ x 4.27″; and, 1254.3 sq. ft. (Package Data). Ciphering . . . each sheet is approx. 16 sq. in. times “2-ply” is double, so 32 sq. inches per sheet, . . . factor in “shrinkflation” and “fudge factor” . . . Oh, oh, Mr. Kotter! And for “Seinfeld” fans, there is the episode where Elaine only needs “three sheets”.

  7. That toilet paper and paper towel math is priceless, what would happen if you stole one roll and got caught? Pretty easy to get that case thrown out, like – it comes with 12 rolls your honor, but after I took one they still had 31 left! 🙂 So cool to see you off to a knife show Clay!       1. You don’t need a PhD-just a solid grounding in the basics, and some logic. Most is simple division.
        “Double” = multiply by 2. That leaves a remainder of 8. So…
        “Plus” = 8
        “Mega”= 4
        “Mega Plus”= 4.5
        “Super Mega”= 6

  8. Work is a bit slow, so packing for a camping trip to Sedona this week in the Jeep. The knife/axe/saw selection criteria is way wider than hiking, but that said it still may take a few days to narrow it down, I hear them all crying “me! me! me!”.

  10. Too soon for Christmas whatnot, but bring on the gravy boats. Our neighbors just harvested their turkeys, wish they could have waited 3 more weeks , but still a fresh bird, just have to briefly freeze. Tried really hard to get a Northwoods (GEC) Jack knife last Wednesday, but apparently I’ll need to learn to type faster, gone in 90 seconds. I was really wanting the blue camel bone. Hope everyone is well. Spending my weekend trying to repair my Christopher Walken cooler. More Glycol!

    1. I agree it’s way too early for Christmas stuff. At least wait until after Thanksgiving. Usually put up my tree and lights that weekend.
