Greetings Comrades! I don’t think I have used that one before, and “Howdy Folks” needed a week off. Unlike senior Russian Officers, it won’t be taking an early “retirement” though.

This is far an away the most awesome story of the week. (don’t worry, we will get to Elon). The memes came fast and furious, even before the story was officially confirmed. Wikipedia was all over it.

I need to go watch Red October again. It has been a while.

Strangely, after last weekend’s four shows, this weekend our Events Calendar is empty.

Which means I can get onto what would, in any other week, have been the theme for the Weekend Open Thread.

I try to keep the WOT largely apolitical. So please pardon the “liberal” references in the memes. But I make a living as a writer. Like Elon, I am a free speech absolutist. That is the Classically Liberal position. The folks screaming loudest against Musk and for censorship are actually anything but “liberal”.

I admire the man, though I am not into the whole personality cult thing. But it does make for great memes.

Thanks Clay, that got here fast, no fingerprints from customs checking out the action, which is very sweet to open, a breeze to close as well. Love the pocket clip, will be flashing this around at our WCKA show this weekend! beautiful looking knife!

    1. Hocky’s “light bulb” goes on . . . the Asian “L” and “R” thing. Brings back a memory of Subic Bay, more so “Olongapo” . . . I learned a few words in Tagalog. As a 21-year old sailor in his first overseas liberty port, I became accustomed to being called”Licky”.

  3. “Little Tykes” Smart Car – Best Mimi of the WOT.

    We had a field day at the “Moran Forge” on Saturday. More debris clearing and moving “stuff” around in preparation for the tentative mid-summer opening of the “Bill Moran Knife Making Academy” (I don’t know if this is the official name for the new school of knife making.) Robert Wilson, President of the “Bill Moran Museum & Foundation”, gave us a tour of the building. The next three months are going to see a lot of action. On my way to the field day, I hit a yard sale on Wolfsville Road. Got a decent “Hickok” spade for $2 (. . . and used it to shovel out the fire pit at the Forge!); Two slipjoints at $5 each: Camillus/New York Cub Scout/BSA in VG condition; and, a Klein?Chicago S-4 (Electrician Knife aka TL-29). I gave the “Cub” to Wally Yader. “Wally” had his 85th birthday party in the “Jay and Nancy Hendrickson Pavilion” on the “Moran Forge” property. Wally is a very important Charter Member of the “Moran Foundation” as well as being a genuinely eccentric individual. He established the Western Maryland Blacksmith Guild near Boonsboro, Maryland in recent years and generously contributes to the knife community at large. We had fried chicken and crab pizza to celebrate Wally’s birthday.

    I got back to Hagerstown about 1430 hours and decided to hit the “Hope Center”, a favorite thrift store of mine, to see what was new. Well, I got a “Gerber 1910420A” . . . a folding cleaver for a “dollar”. Intrigue set upon me . . . Got home and googled Gerbergear.com. It isn’t a “Flatiron” nor a “Fastball” . . . “Asada”??? Maybe. Here’s the intrigue: The stonewashed blade has the Gerber logo and “1910420A” etch. The clip has “GERBER” and the linerlock has the over-travel plate. The OAL is 7.5 in and the cleaver profile matches the “Asada”, but it is a very shallow hollow-grind; OR, a flat grind (my straight-edge is a bit worn). Closer inspection showed this handle (Machined aluminum) with “Torx” screws versus the “Star” screws shown on “Gerbergear”. So, what does this mean? Am I being GERBER anal? All of you know that I do not do “Chinese”. The word “China” is no where to be seen on this knife. I sent an e-mail to ‘Gerber Customer Service’ asking what the “1910420A” means. I am hoping that this is a USA-made “Asada” prototype . . . good, tough “420A” steel. All of this for a “buck”.

    1. Sorry Hocky, the Asada is in fact made in China. Not that it will matter to you, but I found interesting. The same shop that makes these budget Gerbers, makes the overpriced James Brand knives.

  4. The Submarine is epic, a close second is the tractor towing the boat, great memes Clay! The sunshine is here, although the garden hose is frozen solid each morning. The Harley is purring – Loud Pipes Save lives! i really need a sissy bar like the one on a chopper I built when I was 16. Only I would love to incorporate two double edge daggers on the upper portion, just not sure how they could lock in? Happy Easter everyone, especially those heading South for then holiday. There was a four or five hour wait Good Friday to cross into Washington. Cheap gas and eggs for Easter!

      1. Hi Mark, Happy Easter! Never made it to the Harley shop yet, usually go in for a Spring check up, but bringing the Softail to my mechanic’s house this year. he will replace both tires, change all the oils, rebuild my clutch in exchange for some kitchen and hunting knives. Usually the shop would let me take a demo bike while they work on mine. They have Demo Days coming soon, you can test ride any of the bikes you want then, a couple semi-trucks go to all the dealers with the new products, will try then. I really can’t imagine not hearing that potato-potato-potato sound?? Maybe there is an app! I have also set my sites on locating one of the 50th Anniversary Kawasaki Z1s to test ride. The local shop hasn’t got any in yet, can’t wait to hear that growl.

    1. Stuart: The Russian Navy has a poorly trained naval force. I vote for “INCOMPETENCE” with a healthy dose of miserable morale. The Russian submarines literally become radioactive after a few years of service; and, the crews are exposed to ionizing radiation and are basically expendable.

    1. Mark: My most recent talk with “Hank” (RADM, Ret.) involved Ukraine and NATO countries with submarines. There are strong possibilities that the Black Sea has a number of submarines roaming around . . . looking for “targets”. The Russians are there, too. We think there will be some “encounters” and subsequent “disappearances” of ships, . . . hopefully, like the Moskva. Another interesting, geographical factor affecting the Black Sea is the “Bosporus” which is pretty much controlled and monitored by Turkey. One way in and one way out.

      1. I wasn’t certain Ukraine had a navy, and if so if they had a sub or two. I figured they would have been early targets of the Russian Air Force/navy. It makes me smile thinking there may be a Ukrainian sub lurking in the Black Sea, or a NATO sub that may have accidentally misplaced a torpedo or two.

  8. Ukrainian “Neptune” – 1 vs. Russian Black Sea Navy – “Zero”, “GooseEgg”, “Nil”, “Nada”, “Nyet”. Submarine factoid: Diesel-powered submarines are very, very, very quiet . . . more quiet than a nuke-powered boat. The Black Sea is a deep and unusual body of water . . . thermoclines abound . . . see that Russian warship? Huh? Where did it go . . . “Ukes” FTW!!!

      1. Underwater, the diesel boats run on batteries . . . a whole bunch of Energizer Bunnies! Nuke boats can run on batteries, too. Seldom do because the “reactor” doesn’t need air . . . the diesel-generator on my boat was a Fairbanks-Morse 38ND1/8 which I think was Canadian-made. We could “snorkel” and stay “out-of-sight”. Did not do that too much, either.

        1. Submarines are fascinating, never miss those classic movies, even if it’s the 30th time watching a particular one. Could not imagine spending weeks or months under the surface, the tourist one we went on in Kona was enough of an adventure for me! 🙂
