Howdy folks.

Happy Friday once again and welcome to KNIFE Magazine’s Weekend Open Thread. Your shining light in these times of trouble and chaos. Or something like that.

Don’t be dissing the 90’s hip-hop. I still have a little Snoop, Eminem, 50 cent, Bone Thugs, and Biggie floating around my music library.

Obviously it is Super Bowl Weekend. I am less an NFL fan than one of College Football, but I am still a sports fan. I don’t have a dog in the race/horse in the fight but will definitly be rooting for the Bengals now.

RIP Harambe.

It is also the Winter Olympics.

I have never been quite this conflicted about the Olympics. I am a huge fan of the Olympics. It is a bit incongruous for someone as anti-globalist as myself, but I am the son of a Dutch immigrant. My late father and I had a fairly “complicated” relationship, but some of my favorite memories as a kid were watching the Olympics and rooting for both USA and Netherlands – especially the speed skaters. My kids have skyped with their cousins during races.

That said, the CCP can eff right off. THe Games should not have been awarded to a genocidal totalitarian state that misled the world about a virus that many reputable scientists insist escaped from the Wuhan lab. Sod them.

I didn’t watch the opening ceremonies, and I am avoiding as much of the produced coverage as I can. But fact is I am a sports junkie, and I like to watch a lot of the winter sports that don’t get much TV time during the non-olympic years. I took a few minutes of a break to watch the US win gold in mixed team snowboardcross. It seems like cutting off my nose to spite my face to not watch when they are on. (Even Curling)

  3. barely remember sidewalk surfing on ice last night. head lumps and bloodied hand are the only clues. yay. christ i was hammered. started at post42, then things get sketchy. how the hell did i make it this far through winter only to bite it last night? s’bowl and alcohol were involved.
    i was (am still) on ruhro list; used to have a white pedo version as well but am down to the ’03. gm seems to cancel vehicles once they have them sorted (corvair…). little girl has my finsta as “chaz the van man” but you’ll need her permission to view.

    1. Copy, sounds like Thor’s Hammer. ’04 pedo van with 5″ lift, big meats and fully stocked for a few days in the hills. They really found their stride on the ’03-’05 models so was clearly time to discontinue them. No shame in wearing a drinking helmet, especially on Super Bowl Sunday.

        1. ha no dog house, surrounded by tolerant enablers.
          we are born with billions more b’cells than our counterparts so it’s all part of achieving equity.
          the hinges are “drooped” on the driver’s door so it needs an extra tug- that bit overcame the absence of traction on the ice and my scalp grazed the door bumps all the way down. i think it might have gotten the little ball bearing back into the depression in the middle (my head is like a coffe table puzzle). i had knocked that out a while back. win, win!

  4. I like lyrics that I can “understand” and “sing along with” in the F150. So, even though they are mostly in the great beyond, I would love to see Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Elvis, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, any “do wop ’50s-60s groups”; and, many many others do a “Super Bowl” half-time show. Hell, the technology must exist to “bring ’em back”.

    “Super Bowl LVI” . . . pulled for Cincinnati because of their “underdog” status and the sad fate of “Harambe”. Well, they played hard and certainly were not “underdogs”. They will vie for AFC North vs. the “Ravens”. The “Return of Lamarr Jackson”!

    Oh, by the way . . . Patsy Cline, Mel Tillis, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Jim Reeves, Sonny James, Eddy Arnold, Bill Monroe and many, many country music greats would make an outstanding half-time jamboree!

  7. my only mora lives in the van, hanging on the door handle.
    just processed a pound of red habaneros, imake a quart of hot sauce each year. a little plastic handled kuhn rincon parer and a kai dm0723 vg max damascus wifey got. i dont use gloves so after that juice packs under the nails it reminds me whos boss for the next few days. not even dawn gets rid of it. is that someting in your eye? do you need tobreak theseal?
    lost a garage spaceso had to fire up the ragtop ghia yesterday and move it out of storage. the alley is pure ice.

I made friends there that are now real life friends. LONG LIVE BURNING VAN! Use extreme caution in the bathroom till that habanero juice is gone.

            the hardest i ever saw my kids laugh was when i voiced, “i might need to go to the horsepistol” after habanero genitalia contact. sheesh, what a maroon.

    2. If you want to deal with the habjuice, a little milk and cottage cheese soak and scrub. Think soak for 10-15 minutes. Remember Madge and Palmolive dishwashing detergent? You’re soaking in it!

  9. Yup, the Welsh bobsled team was the winner, not least as I did my undergrad studies in Cardiff and I think I met some of the ‘athletes’ in the photo.
    Hocky – welcome to the Morakniv club, I doubt it will be your last, just ease off on hardwoods with that skinny skanni edge, it does benefit from a slight convexing, but who doesn’t these days?.

All heat-treated and ready for scales. This week’s memes rock! The Welsh bobsled team had Carolyn and I in tears! And since Kansas City is watching this years game, I too will be cheering for the Bengals! Have a great weekend everyone!

  11. I already told Clay the following: Sold my “TOPS” “HOG-4.5” & “Fieldcraft BOB” to a veteran-best friend. He is a much more the “wandering survivor” than me. So, after lunch at the “Golden Corral” (. . . AICE chicken legs, braised fish fillets, some vegs, mashed potatoes w/gravy, apple pie, a brownie, black coffee . . .), I went to the “Washington Street Pawnshop” , Hagerstown and was rewarded with a “Mora 510 (Carbon)” and a Victorinox “Super Tinker” with USA Flag scales, both MIB! for $20. This is my first “Mora” and I really like the utility of it. It is in the ’08 F150. All of you peer “WOTers” have kept me looking for a “Mora”.

    Hauled 3/4 ton of mulch yesterday and started on the flowerbeds. The shoveling and raking and crawling on the ground was a back to nature event which invigorated me. Ambient was 60 F, sunny and a bit of a breeze.

    “Events Calendar” was a great plug-in for this week’s “WOT”. Hopefully, I will get up I-81 for the “Keystone Blade Association” show on February 26-27 in Lewisburg, PA; and, April is looking absolutely terrific with the “Shenandoah Valley Knife Club” event in Harrisonburg, VA on April 1-3; and, the “Mason Dixon Knife Club” show on April 22-23.

    Updating the “Moran Foundation” knife-making school progress, . . . the contractor got quite a bit of the foundation work in before the really cold weather these past weeks. I will expect that March and forward will see quite a bit of erections. We should be ready for the “Bill Moran Annual All-Forged Knife Expo” in October.

    1. Hocky, was just gonna ask you if you wanted to trade that Fieldcraft BOB. Sounds like it’s found a good home though. Hadn’t thought about Golden Corral in years. When I was a kid I worked, very briefly, at one. I still have a scar on my arm from burning it on a giant sheet pan baked potatoes. Glad you finally get to experience what is probably the best value knife around. I’ve given all my Moras away. I carried a 510 on my EDC bag for a couple years, it now has Gerber Strong Arm strapped to it.

      1. JASON K: As I always do when cruising my favorite knife places, I will be on the lookout for “1974” knives and a “BOB”. Yes, my friend, “Ron”, will carry the “TOPS” in the wilds of far-western Maryland and beyond. Regarding the “Corral”, those chicken legs and fish fillets kept me on a protein high for two days!

    2. 60 degrees Hocky, still freezing here! Usually fire up the Softail early March, hoping it is earlier, heard some global warming thing some time ago. Hoping it wasn’t fake news! And I am going to check out some local pawn shops soon, you would love our WCKA show in April, part of a huge gunshow, almost every gun dealer has a glass showcase loaded with treasures! Will see what we can find for you this year!

      1. Last weekend was ice storm aftermath. 68 on Thursday. Gorgeous day! Topped out at 40 today heading into the 20’s tonight. Mid sixties predicted for tomorrow! Don’t like the weather? Just wait 5 minutes!
        I’ve said this before, Hockey has the best pawn shops! There is never anything knife-wise nearly as cool as the stuff he finds.

        2. We only have two shops in town, but our as I’ve mentioned our WCKA knife show in April, part of a huge gunshow, is loaded with treasures. Almost every dealer has a glass display case loaded with pocket knives, the occasional custom knife too. Really learning from everyone here what to look for, besides the Marble and Case knives I already look for. Did find some custom treasures recently, an antique dealer in Vancouver contacted me about some of my knives he bought at an estate sale, one is a fully engraved damascus fighter, integral – gun blued, french grey engraving by Knut Lie. The guy wants a damascus kitchen knife for it. I only ground the blade, he also has a lockback folder that he might part with. That one I did grind and assemble the knife, it had CNC machined scales, also blued and french grey engraved. Wish I could post pics.

          1. “Knut Lie” is a must-look-up name! Is that pronounced, “Ka-noot”? Sounds Scandanavian like “Knute” (Rockne). I am always looking for “four letter first names” to go with “Hockensmith”!! My son”s wives are having “boys”, e.g. “Axel”, and “his brother” is due in mid-July! Of course, I have ventured “Seax” to my son’s wife and she wasn’t too keen on it being near the “sex” word. I even showed her a picture of this Viking knife! Maybe, she will consider “Knif” . . .

        3. MARK R: Referencing my recent visit at “Washington Street Pawnshop”, they had a “Helle – Tamagami”, MIT. I was tempted, but they were asking $169, which is about $10 below “brand new” at Amazon et al. I could negotiate with them (. . . I am kind of a REGULAR!), but, I have an “Arn” (MIT, “Mint in Tube”, ha, ha . . . but true!) which I will probably sell or trade at an upcoming knife show. My peddler’s bag is a bit crowded. On Saturday, I visited the “Appalachian Station Trading Post” in Cavetown, MD. The owners, Jeff & Terri Fogle, have a significant number of custom knives as well as vintage pocketknives. Basically, nothing “Made in China” or “Pakistan” . . . Steve Nuckels sells knives to them as do other “Moran Foundation” blade smiths, regional knife makers (MD, PA, WV, VA). I was there about three hours showing my “For Sale and/or Trade” knives. Good time!

          2. Knif……:) , Yes, Knut is from Norway. He is a machinist extraordinaire! Makes the most beautiful guns, does some great engraving. Will send you a shot of the latest treasure I’m trading for. From an estate sale, a guy contacted me about a couple knives he bought asking if I knew who made them. Said my name was on all the receipts that came with the knives. Yeah, they were knives I made or did with Knut. A folder and a fighter had Knut’s French grey engraving, CNC scales on the folder. My first lockback, we did two together. I was so proud to make them walk and talk!

      S30V clip point blade, nickel silver bolsters, American elk handles, engraving, distressed leather sheath.
