Hey All,

I began to gather these memes when the storm was still moderate and days from landfall. Turns out that this was “the Big One”, and not a joke at all.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. And not just those in Florida. This thing is clobbering the Carolinas too, with one of the stranger tracks I can remember seeing.

None of these memes are particularly disrespectful, but a bit of gallows humor is a coping mechanism, and these are shared with that in mind.

 

Solid strategy. Just be sure to give the good boi or gurl their bacon reward you cheapskate.

Priorities.

Genius.

You will regret it later.

Told you so.

Whatever works.

I love that that template is still going.

Bowie’s Memorial Hammer-In

This is apparently the resurrection of a once well regarded gathering in upper East Tennessee. Mark will be there, but I can’t make it.

I better get on the giveaway drawing then…Hocky is our first token winner for the first of the BeyondEDC knives.

We are giving away a pair of BeyondEDC “Arch” folders in a bit of a modified  “Two Token” drawing format.

You need to be drawn two non-consecutive weeks to win. Your first draw gets you a “token” toward winning the knife.

If you are a new commenter on the Weekend Open Thread, and you are not drawn as a token holder when we give away the first knife, you will automatically receive a token towards the second, and thus will be one drawing away from the win.   2. I had breakfast with my friend Sid Barnhart at a Greencastle, PA diner on Saturday morning. Sid and I went to Haywood Community College, Clyde, NC in September 2014 for the ABS “Intro to Bladesmithing” class. Sid is a classic custom knife maker and a “Bill Moran Foundation” member. He brought three knives with him that I had an interest in buying. I had seen photos of them. Seeing and handling them was the kicker. All three of the knives were my type of fixed-blade EDC ; that is, about 5 1/2 inch OAL with an approx. 2 inch convex-grind blade. One was handled in walnut. The other was a fascinating, multi-hued stabilized pine cone. (I will send Clay photos). Both blades were “L6” from an ancient sawmill blade. I bought these two. Sid is making sheaths for them; and, putting a bit of jimping on the spine so my BIG THUMB gets some traction! Mentioning the 3rd knife, Sid called it a “factory reject” because he was not happy with the grind and there was a eensy-weensy (sp?) warp in the blade. The handle is dark cherry from a tree that he personally cut down. Regarding that, Sid was going to keep the knife.

    Another reason for breakfast was to give Sid his knife cases. Recently, I got my federal EIN for wholesales. I bought one hundred cases from ACE Cases, St. Clair, MO, USA. I am a long time admirer of the quality of these cases. Please check out their website: acecases.com. If you call them, you will most likely be speaking to “Angie” who is just plain fantastic! An interesting point in the exterior cloth used on the cases is that “ACE” gets bulk shipments of cloth delivered by railroad. Kind of a “Forrest Gump” thing on chocolates . . . you never know what the cloth will be! Quality cloth in a wide array of patterns and colors. I will have “ACE” cases at the Moran Show!

      1. Mark: I bought “100 individual knife cases”. Your tongue twister rivals “Sister Susie Sells Seashells . . . “, BIG LAUGH! I got an assortment of sizes: 6 in; 10 in; 13 in; 18 in; and, 21 in. The 6 inch is 2 inches wide and all others are 4 inch W. All of these sizes were the same cost. Now, if you want a 25 inch for your BIG BOWIE, . . . it cost a bit more!

    2. When I tell buyers to never store a knife in a sheath for long periods of time, especially when wet, they love that a zippered case comes along with their purchase. The chemicals used in the tanning process can attack that blade. I haven’t seen it happen on stainless knives that were new or dry, but have on some knives. You will be ordering another hundred very fast Hocky, these are such a good idea for storage and transport. The custom ones I order have elastic which nicely holds the sheath on the outside.

      1. Del: The knife cases with the elastic band are nice. ACE does not make that type . . . not yet. Now that I am a “dealer”, I have suggested that the “banded” case be considered.

        You are correct about the corrosive effect on knives, i.e. carbon steel knives, being stored in a sheath where either moisture and/or tanning chemicals may harm them. Regarding “tanning”, I have heard that “vegetable tanned” leather does not have a corrosive effect on steel. I am a leather sheath enthusiast and most of my custom forged carbon-steel blade knives have basswood-lined leather sheaths. According to Bill Moran, and the many knife makers he influenced, a knife can be kept in a wood-lined sheath without risk of corrosion. There are other benefits to having a wood-lined sheath. In “Forever a Legend”, 2015, Steve Shackleford (Text) and Francesco Pachi (Photography); Chapter V: “Parking Them in the Moran Garage”, valuable insight can be gained as to why Bill Moran labored on creating sheaths that protected the knife owner as well as the knife.

    Sparta, Waffle House, and kids costume memes had me laughing.
    I was hoping Judge would have hit his 62nd tonight – hopefully soon. The guy who catches that ball could have a nice sum of money coming his way. I heard they are making a secret mark on every ball that is pitched to him, to prevent counterfeit balls being sold.
    Hurricane Ian has proven to be no joke. 5th worst storm to hit Florida, I think? I did like the bacon meme, though.
    I remember being the remote control… until I passed the torch to my little brother, lol.

  4. Thanks Mark! Totally about the cool WOTers here, too much fun, not to mention how much I’m learning from everyone.

    And the thing about hunters is they are so focused on getting the meat looked after that they put the knife in the sheath and forget about it. The hunters get a break, what I don’t get is the kitchen knives with all the crud, I don’t even complain, as I mentioned these people get charged! 🙂

  5. First and foremost, I do the “WOT” for the interaction with knife people. I have learned a lot from the everyday carry knife enthusiasts who regularly comment in the “WOT”. Also, I have gained valuable knowledge about making beer in Oregon ; Motorcycles in Kamloops and Chicago; Things of the United Kingdom; Life in Texas; Life in Tennessee; Life in general: Gardening; Grammar; and, that the core group of readers of “Knife” who contribute to the “WOT” share their life experiences freely. I am a “WOTer” and I appreciate the folks at “Knife” for providing a means to expand my horizons in the knife community.

    Saturday morning update: Two weeks to the Bill Moran “7th Annual All-Forged Knife Show” (October 15th) . . . getting pumped!! The T-shirts for this year’s Show have Bill’s forge on them: The T-shirts for the “Grand Opening” of our new “Bladesmithing Academy” (October 16th) feature “Bill at the Forge”.

    To “Knife” staff, if you would like to send me some “Knife” promotional items to give away at the “Show”, I would enjoy that opportunity. Hopefully, some of you will attend the “Show” and the “Grand Opening”.

    1. Agreed, Hocky! It is an interesting group and I’m better off for having found it.
      I won’t get to either the Show or the Grand Opening, but I look forward to your reports! It’s on my calendar, and I’ve enjoyed the countdown!
      Del-my hunting days are long behind me. I understand how a knife can get “dirtied up”, but I don’t understand asking someone else to put an edge on a gunked up, bloody knife. So please, rant away whenever you need to! We’re here for you.!
      Speaking of putting an edge on-how’s the sharpening video coming along?

      1. Hoping to have the video done this week or next Mark. Then have to get the green light from Mark for the KM website, then ask the graphics magician “Katie” to polish it a bit. Will keep you posted, I haven’t started a page or site yet.

        I have an antique kitchen knife lined up for this, has the most beautiful patina from years of use!

  6. Congrats Hocky! And yeah, my parents always had a remote, until I left home. I get the “Sharp blade” Clay. I always clean the blade with acetone after sharpening, don’t want contamination form buffing compounds or such left on the blade when I return them. As for kitchen and hunting knives, that is a whole meme-world in itself about the blood, deer hair, grease, food I see on the box of blades some hand to me.

    You got to be kidding is an understatement. I don’t charge friends or customers for their box-full, unless I get dirty knives, and I always get dirty knives!

    Sorry, back to our regular programming: As I was saying Clay, was cleaning a long kitchen knife I made, it was so sharp I didn’t even feel it sliding along and opening up my thumb, gusher as you well know! Changed the way I grip them now, but mostly not paying attention. Have a great weekend everyone!

    1. I know of plenty rookie barbers who have sliced open a thumb or finger while not paying attention to how they are cleaning off their razor. That changed the way I clean my kitchen knives, for sure!

  8. “70’s remote?” . . . 1959, B&W Philco with a screen so tiny . . . how tiny was it? There were four (4) stations received via a rooftop antenna: ABC, CBS, NBC and WTTG-5 (Washington D.C. independent). My Dad called it “flipping channels” using an actual knob . . .like points on a distributor it could get worn out! Call the TV repairman!

    Oh, this is about remote controls. That is such science fiction.

    1. “Flipping channels”… my family said the same thing. When the knob broke off of our tv, we had to use needle nose pliers to turn the pin inside the tv, haha. You’re making me nostalgic, Hocky!
      When we finally replaced that tv, the broken one was still working long enough for us to move it to the basement and let the kids suit to hook up their video games.

      When the “big” Curtis Mathis console TV went out Dad set the small TV on top of the console TV. It stayed that way until he could afford to have it repaired.

        1. got a old used tester when i was introduced to vacuum hifi. variac as well, our line voltage is too high and eats rectifiers tubes. just run big battery arrays they say.
          remember strolling over tl walgreens with pops to test tv tubes. kind of miss the warmup/ cool down phases (with the little tiny dot fading). and that indian head test pattern. didn’t know what “denotes childrens show” meant in the tv guide. looked for it for years. used to ask mom what uhf was on the basement portable zenith. it had 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 and that, but no uhf tuner. sort of like the “future park” across the street.
          every easter the old man would be at a convention, maw would set up a tiny in the kitchen so we could watch oz. years later we got a color quasar (by motorola) as a premium for a bank deposit. pissed off when the munchkin land turned to color, felt robbed all those years. must have been breathtaking in the theatre.
          there were alot of pliers households for flippin’ nana had a big deal magnavox that had a little motor the remote would kachunk. i didn’t mind changing channels- nothin’ but energy- but my sisters would try to make me the antennae by holding the bunny ears for better reception.

  9. Congrats on the token, Hockey! I, too, r ember being the TV remote…90’s Bulls had me laughing out loud.
    Gallows humor is a good thing-I find laughter helps us heal. Well, that and a really clean cut from a really sharp edge.

    1. I’ve heard that 90s bulls story before. Jordan is the GOAT, without a doubt. Rodman is still crazy, to this day, but I think he was under rated – he played a physical and psychological game like no one else.

      2. kid at work will go to great lengths to make the case for kobe. but his nickname is “juicer” for veggy blends, so… it figured that the one dynasty chicago managed was this sport (i have a referential term, but i’ll spare y’all) so i never enjoyed any of it. we would see these players around locally, two jerkies and a quirky. at least the hawks had some years in contention.
