Howdy folks, Happy Friday…

Another week seems to have flown by. It was the first full week of School for the kids and we are settling into our fall routine. I am looking forward to the start of football, college in particular. I heard the dead-name-walking Indians got throttled 17 to 0 last night. Good. I want to see them return to the depths of mediocrity. I am actually ashamed of the city of Cleveland for how little pushback the team received for changing the name. So I am done with MLB. I will keep watching bus-league baseball in person though.

So, what do you all have planned for the fall. For now most knife shows have remained scheduled, though that is getting a bit shakier.

This weekend brings the rescheduled Dalton Roadshow and Arkansas Knife Shows.  Mark is attending the latter. He will be wearing a blue shirt.

I am thankful to be living in Tennessee, which isn’t going bonkers over the whole Delta thing. I feel badly for those who aren’t lucky enough to live where sanity prevails.

We try to avoid political memes, but this and the next one were really good, and Cuomo is a terrible human being. And his state is the second worst in the nation in deaths/million. But Florida is going to kill us all.

Someone with a degree in “Design” came up with that. I hope I didn’t underwrite their student loans.

I figure I will knock the contest stuff out before getting on with a blast of memey randomness.

Cmeat is the winner of the drawing. I had an idea.  This week’s prize was print backissue, Goins Encyclopedia, Website Membership or a Military History Reference Guide. Cmeat is already a Premium Member, and I am pretty sure I have sent him at leas one of those books, I am going to add an extra option.

I have a couple of Vero Engineering knives to give away, but they are really too expensive for a straight drawing like this. So Cmeat has the option, as does this week’s winner, of choosing to forgo their prize in favor of a “win token”. The first reader to win twice will get their choice of the Veros. I will keep giving this option until we have a winner. I hope that made sense. If not ask in the comments.

  2. Just returned from great 4 day hike in The Sequoias. Put a roll in my nicely tuned Opinel on a pine knot, I may have to rethink that option, maybe the Inox variant is just too soft? Still it is fantastic to get away from the daily madness and enjoy the staggering beauty of this land.

    1. I recall reading that that Opinel stainless was HR 56. That’s the same as a SAK. In my experience the Opinel holds its edge longer then a SAK. I don’t think it’s the steel.
      As you know, Opinels can get scary sharp. Pine knots are hard!
      I think you very thin, sharp edge met a stubborn knot. Knots roll lots of knives not just Opies.

      1. Mark – thanks for the link, nice site. I got most of it out with a brass edge (no rods), so right now it only bugs me because I know its there, though it looks like its pretty much realigned. It’s a skinny edge and best used for lighter tasks, but hey, whittlers gonna whittle!

        1. “Steeling” with a smooth butcher’s steel resets a rolled edge really well. Most modern “steels” usually have raised striations and are coated with diamond dust which WILL remove metal. I haven’t used “brass” to realign a rolled edge. I reckon that it would “smooth” out a roll. Good job on “knot” over-stepping the process! Aargh, Hocky humor.

          Regarding this week’s memes: Tonya and Nancy, Marty McFly, “Psycho” and Knight Rider . . . their are some fertile minds in the Land of Oz!

          Lastly, I received the Vero Fulcrum. I am trying to figure out “what” this might be used for on an as needed basis. If it had a “blade”, then I could see it as a functional multi-tool. The “Wiha” Torx bits are a plus; But, only two bits can be held in the body of the unit secured by a snap fit and the O-rings . . . I would remove the clip and make a place for the Torx bits. The business end of the “Fulcrum” (aka the ‘wedge’ or prying end) makes me think that it would serve as a potent “kubaton”. The “edge of the wedge” does not have a secondary bevel like a cold chisel. It is rounded. Getting back to adding a “blade” to the Fulcrum, I suggest the CKRT “KISS” designed by the late Ed Harrigan. All my best to everyone.           1. someone out there makes a proper carry tool; i haven’t found it. the fulcrum ticks some boxes, i like the bitsa provisions.
            i lament ttpockettools leaving the market. i think he etsied, i don’t etsy.
            if you notice, having a phillips really separates most of the simpler tools in terms of usefulness. buy a nice set of tamperproof torx. methinks maybe the center hole forces them to be a higher grade, harder steel.
            needed a no.1 phillips to completely disassemble an oontz wireless speaker: multiple sets of four tiny little buggers to break that thing down to the actual detent switch for power. what a stupid, weak design. i cut a jumper in half and now have two alligator clips hanging outside that bite each other for “on.”

    1. I hope you’ve got good knee pads. They saved my knees 14 years ago when I helped my son-in-law replace carpet with planking.
      Got my third jab this morning. After testing negative for antibodies I hope this one sticks,
      A little tired of being a homebody’s homebody. So if any of you are doing anything-from replacing carpet to a trip into the desert to just about anything else I’d love to hear about it.

  6. I busted a gut laughing at the soon to be former governor channeling the Eagles on the phone! Several excellent memes this week Clay!
    We just finished the traditional hottest time of the year here (last week of July through the first 2 weeks of August). And right on schedule we’re cooling down this weekend to predicted high of 91. Balmy, even refreshing! Grandkids started back to school this past week. Folks are a little more stressed here then in Tennessee, but most aren’t insane yet. All of the pediatric ICU beds in the north Texas region are full. Several kids on vents. Hopefully this will pass quickly.

    bountiful meme harvest. oft times i’ll tell my kids i don’t get one and they explain, no that’s it- it’s no more than that. so i never really know but some of those are great.
    tons of residual storm damage ’round these parts, more night shifts, double back at 10pm ’til 6am.
    it’s been hot too. bringing ice to the garage for the point, genny creamale and redstripe. ryobi makes a “mister” fan that clips onto a plastic clam bucket. somewhat better.

        the nicest weekend of the year and i found myself walking. my friday night ride to the skylark at cermak and halsted saw my entire taillight assembly fall off. i found two online but it’ll be a few days- otherwise i’d have had to fabricate an alternative. 15mi ride home w/ o tail or brake light… nerve wracking.
        i’ll drag lil’ girl back to ohiowa for her senior year, but not until i replace that funky 1- 2 shift solenoid on the astro. eh, la. always sumpin’.
