Howdy folks…

I am sure that I will have a raft of Halloween memes next week, but as they say, “‘Tis the Season”. I don’t like Christmas theming before Thanksgiving, but that is a losing battle.

So how is everyone doing? We are at the halfway point between issues. The post-publishing reprieve is now over, and I have started pulling together my Knife News column for December. Strangely, I actually know 3 of the 4 already, so if I can make myself write ahead of deadline, I could have a very stress free Press Week. I also have a lacrosse scrimmage to coach on Tuesday, and a pair of games on both Saturday and Sunday of Halloween.

It was warm last weekend, but after some midweek rain we are back in the 60s.

It is always tailgate weather. Or weather for hanging out with your buddies. Or selling propane and propane related accessories.

I like their sense of humor.

  2. I enjoy the vintage cartoons. They are memorable. “Popeye” is a favorite of mine. Recently, I saw “Shiver Me Timbers”, CMXXXIV, on ‘MeTV’. Basically, Popeye, Olive Oyl, and “Wimpy” (J. Wellington Wimpy) board a ghost ship and engage the macabre assortment of characters like dancing skeletons and invisible things. These manifestations do not seem to want to harm the group of adventurers. However, harmful “things” appear, especially a knife slashing a rope that Popeye is hanging onto . . . So, he squeezes open a large can of spinach; “inhales it”, thrashes the supernaturals and rules the seas. “Wimpy” tries to eat “ghost burgers” and Olive Oyl . . . what a sweetheart!

  4. owls carry some killer symbolism.
    i’ve only seen a few in the wild… heard them many more times. day sightings are surprising.
    “the grove” (an early settler, kennicott property preservation) has one that lives in a huge dome cage at their interpretive center.
    a plumb beats my tramontina hands down, but if it isn’t a kukhri, i’ll take a bolo.

    1. CMEAT: Vintage Tramontina is good stuff! This vintage “PLUMB” Bolo needs quite a bit of restoration. It has the “bones” for it as I presented previously. I will try to stay true to its original design. Whoever sharpened it over the last 100 years gave it a “swedge edge”. I am researching photos at on-line sites to determine if the knife had a swedge.

  5. Owls are fascinating. My nephew and I were rummaging through an old barn on his property near Wolfsville, Md. There were quite a few tools that could be deemed relics, e.g. three-tined hay forks, two-man saws. My big discovery was a “PLUMB 1918/Phila. MOD – 1917, Bolo.” It was intact; that is, wood handles were solid; steel guard a bit loose and the blade was well-shaped though it had been sharpened with what appears to be a grindstone and maybe files. The blade does have a slight bend near the guard. I think I can fix that. I will send Clay a photo and he might share it with you folks. Oh, . . . the knife was hanging in the loft near a loading door with a large diameter pulley. From that perch, a barn owl was watching my every move! Wisely, I moved to the ladder, down I went and out of got. There was zero threat from the owl. I will go back and look for other treasures . . . I need to get a live mouse for the owl to make it a fair trade.

  7. Afternoon walk around the pond at the local park I saw a Scissor Tailed Fly Catcher. That’s the buff bird from the Oklahoma coin. They have usually moved on by now. Beautiful pale blue birds that are incredible

  9. gotta go to the bigboxsto for the full size sugar bombs. we hand out large every year. the clever ones return. about ten years ago we started seeing school buses coming up from indiana for treats. they get the loose jolly rancher sized crap. not denied, prejudiced.
    looks to be the last tshirt riding for the year. don the snowmobobble suit for the toy run in december and put her away.
    wednesday the supersuckers play in the south loop. not to be missed, even on a school night.
    stopped in at papas cache sofrito saturday night for a jibarito (steak sandwich on fried plantain); was in food coma for two hours. venturing into the city these days is weird. i find myself scoping everyone out. there’s alot of “to whom it may concern” lead being tossed about lately.
    our governor, states attorney and mayor (among others) are ‘tarded.

    1. Ah the Supersuckers, still at it. Had the pleasure of getting weird with Eddy Spaghetti a couple times, his ego barely fits most stages, but what do you expect from “The greatest rock n roll band in the world”. Lemmy once said, “If you don’t like The Supersuckers, you don’t like rock ‘n’ roll.”

  10. The last word I heard on UTENN was the $250K they were fined for throwing stuff at Mississippi State. I thought “TN” was a dry state. It is just a football game.

  12. First and foremost: Congratulations to JASONK. If you choose the “Axon” (aka Wharncliffe); and, when you receive it and get the “feel” of it, then I would appreciate you sharing a “WOTer” review with us at “KnifeWOT”.

    Made me laugh: “Okie Buff-Ass Birdman” definitely worth 25 cents. The “wise boy” . . . He should get an “A+”. “Men Without Hats” are hearing these new lyrics (. . . and trying like Clay’s wife to shake it out of their heads.)

    The past week’s thrift store finds: Two “steels” at the ‘Hope Center’. One is stamped ‘Flint, England’ and is a smooth rod which I prefer to the “ribbed ones”. I got me some “new” Wrangler jeans for $2.25. Don’t laugh, I grew up with Mom buying me Wrangler’s at Montgomery Wards at the start of the school year: Two pair for $5, I think. Converse canvas hi-tops, too. I still have a pair of size 12’s in the F150 truck box.

    At a store in Cavetown, MD, (Appalachian Station Trading Post), which has a wide variety of custom and production knives, I bought a “Canal Street Cutlery” (CSC) doctor’s knife. According to my “CSC” friend, Eric Albers of “Albers Cutlery Co.” this knife was made at the start of “CSC” history in 2004-2005. (Note: The demise of “Schrade” in 2004 led to the formation of “CSC”. “Canal Street Cutlery” operated from 2004-2015 in Ellenville, NY.) My knife is handled in Amber Stag with a Spear-point blade of 440C. There is a “spatula” blade . . . I got to use this for something! Eric said that artists used it as a palette knife. The bolsters are NiAg and my knife is stamped “47” (47/200). Next on my “CSC” find it list: “Cannitler”.

  13. Went to SMKW today and picked up the new swiss army style knife from civivi called the crit. Seems like a nice modern take on the SAK. I wonder if they will be expanding to larger toolset offerings in the future.

  14. Hot dog, I’m a wiener! Super excited for the Wharncliffe, it looks like a very well made knife. Feeling guilty because so many here wanted that knife. To make me feel less guilty I’m gonna make a donation to a charity yet to be determined. Will be flying back to IA to visit my family and celebrate my Grandmother’s 100th birthday next week. Need to mail myself a knife to have while there.

  16. Congratulations Jason! I hope you enjoy your new Vero! I’ve not seen these Gerber pocket tools in person. The silhouette of the scissors on the Pry remind me of the wire cutters from The Great Escape! The drive on the Drive looks much more useful than the one on the Armbar.
    I still have, carry and use a Shard my son gave me years ago for Father’s Day. And and an Artifact left in my Christmas stocking. I may be the only guy who actually likes the Artifact! Hanging with the grandkids this weekend! Clay-bamg out the assignments this week. No excuses! Then enjoy your down time!

    1. I too have a Gerber artifact that I enjoy carrying from time to time Mark. I think the artifact is a better tool than the shard.
