Howdy Everyone.

Hope you had a good week. It is time for the Weekend Open Thread. It is jam-packed, so let’s get going. There have actually been a couple of meme-worthy items in the news of late. Some border on political, but are still within bounds.

The Met Gala had some moments. Our “betters” aren’t even hiding their hypocrisy anymore.

I’d rather have a chicken biscuit.

The other memeworthy event was the “rally” in DC last weekend. The media and law enforcement outnumbered demonstrators by at least 5:1 by all accounts. I wonder which side of the ledger you put these fedbois. They are trying to look like demonstrators, but as a cop friend of mine said, “that photo looks like every squad bbq I have ever attended”.

Who thought that this was a good idea?

  1. My research on one of the “butcher” knives revealed an “E. S. Hulbert & Co.” stamp. This blade-stamp consists of two concentric circles. “E. S. Hulbert & Co.” is ‘at top’ in the outer circle; A scimitar is centered in the inner circle; and “SHEAR STEEL” is “at bottom” in the outer circle. This company originated circa 1846 and made cutlery and other cutting tools, e.g. hoes, corn choppers, in Bernardston, Massachusetts. Well, a little “OOOO” steel wool and 3-in-1 oil cleaned this knife up nicely. I would call it a “slicer”: 9 1/2 ” blade; 14 1/2″ OAL: 1″ nominal width: half-tang w/wooden handle and steel rivets. A real nice addition to my Robeson, Universal, Old Hickory line-up of knives of yore. The other knife? It is a “no name” and will prove useful as it is full tang and sturdy. . . I need to make a sheath for it. Oh, the Camillus “Yellow Jaket” is a lockback from the early “80s”.

  2. Monkey bars, seesaws, jungle gyms and the omnipotent “whirl around” (. . . or whatever it was called). Put the girls on it and a bunch of us speedy guys would push that “iron circle” until the girls were screaming! Some of the lightweight ones would fly off or “jump” . . . nobody got hurt too bad. Elementary school was the early training ground for future boot camp recruits. Navy boot camp wasn’t much. I knew some Marines from the last century. Parris Island was stocked with alligators back then, . . . as the story goes. Back to grade school . . . what was your EDC? Mine was that Kabar 1026 jack knife. It sits on my dresser as a memory of sharpening No.2’s. This weekend I scored a couple of vintage slipjoints at a yard sale: Camillus “Yellow Jacket”; Russell “Barlow” bone-handled, G-VG condition, circa 1900’s (derived from tang stamp) and a decent Craftsman TL-29. Also, I got two three-rivet wood-handled “butcher” knives that need some rust-removal, etc. After cleaning them up, I will know more about their heritage.

  6. Oh, referencing this week’s memes, the “milk crate looking jungle gym” reminds me of the one I enjoyed in grade school. The young man looking down at the “upside down” girl in the dress is getting an early education in the differences between the sexes . . . ah, the memories.

  8. The dog & food meme is on point. Been camping along the coast for a week without phone, been pretty relaxing. Gave my mom my Mora 511. She was trying to use a dull SAK to make feather sticks. I brought more knives than I realized.

    2. First and foremost, at my next horse race I am betting big on “Random Chance”. I feel fortunate, lucky and humble to have been picked to receive the “Hoffner Hand Spear”. It just might go into the F150 as a companion to my Gerber “Prodigy” and all-American crowbar. I wish all my “WOT” friends the best in the “Vero” contest. (Note: I do like that “Sheepsfoot/Reverse Tanto/Wharncliffe” blade . . . . the bottom one with green-pouch. I would be willing to negotiate a trade to the person who selects that knife. Bait: “Hand Spear”).

      1. She does get to keep it. I like buying Moras and giving them away, just means I need to pick up another one in a different flavor. Haven’t had a mora companion for years since I gave it to a buddy, he keeps it on his wheelchair. Clay, speaking of, I’m surprised you didn’t spoof the wheelchair knife in this weeks news.

  9. always good to see dingle. that show went largely under the radar. even the fine feature film was well produced. surprise cameo from paul rubens.
    we reference an outrageous scene often in lieu of goodbyes: “touch my fuzzy hearts!”
