In 1856, Smith & Dickinson had an import agency at 25 Cliff Street, New York City. They were agents for the Hargreaves manufactory, located at 28 Eyre Lane, Sheffield, England. In 1859, the agency became Smith and McMaster. The company became Hargreaves Smith and Company about 1866.
