At the top of the archaeological site of Creuzier-le-Neuf, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, a team from the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) has uncovered an extensive necropolis dated to the Iron Age. Although soil conditions have prevented the preservation of human remains, the site offers valuable insight into funerary practices and the prestige objects associated with the elites of the time.

I miss my archaeology days. Though I was paleolithic.

  1. Hocky- Congrats on some interesting finds. I’m officially giving up on my local pawn shops. For some reason there seems to be a never ending supply of Chinese made Batman knives. When the tv show first aired in 1966 (I was 9) I would have given my right arm for one. Now, not so much.
    I spent Friday evening and part of yesterday afternoon trying to clean up an 84mm SAK “Tinker Small” made sometime between 1980-84. I’ll be giving that to my grandson when he comes by this afternoon. Warm water, old toothbrush mostly to remove the old junk, then some fresh 3 in 1. I’ve gotten it to where you can at least open it without breaking fingernails! Sweet little knife. Great watch pocket carry.

    1. Everyone should have a SAK! The “Tinker” has all the necessary tools. I suggest you “exercise” the tools to ease the movement. The 3-in-1 should clean out the pivots and exercising the tools distributes the lube. Using some “canned air” might help, too. I have several slip-joints, e.g. “Ulster 10” Barlows, Sodbusters, which I use during outside activities. They tend to get dust, dirt and other small particles in them. I maintain them after every use with compressed air & WD40 or 3-in-1. I use a wood popsicle stick with a bit of oil-impregnated cloth to clean inside the handle. This action keeps the backspring oiled. Wipe away any excess oil notably around the tang area. A cotton swab is useful. Yeah, I sound a bit intense on this “cleanliness”. Involve your grandson on the “Tinker” maintenance as it will last him a lifetime.

  2. “Ode to the WOT”: I chose this post on Saturday morning to share some recent pawn shop finds: “SEARS/CRAFTSMAN/U.S.A. 95225″ w/original leather sheath & steel”. “Camillus” is the most likely manufacturer of this slip-joint somewhere around 1975-1980. “Camillus” held a long-term contract w/”Sears” to make knives beginning in the late 1930’s. “Schrade” was one of the big boys who honed in on the “Sears” knife business, too. “Western” was another one.
    On this one, please understand that I do not buy PRC-knives . . . but, I bought a “Spyderco-Byrd Cara Cara 2” plain edge for $10. “Why”? Because the knife edge had been perfectly reshaped with a convex profile. I am talking “Moran” style apple-seed grind! Whoever did this knew what they were seeking. I would keep this knife in the F150 if it did not have “China” etched on the tang. It will be in the peddler bag at the “Fairground Yard Sale” on June 14th . . . America’s “Flag Day”.
