Over the past four decades plus, one particular Portland, Oregon-based manufacturer has steadily established a nigh-unimpeachable rep for high-quality multi-tools.

At less than one-third the age of Swiss Army knife originator Victorinox, Tim Leatherman’s eponymous company is renowned amongst the EDC cognoscenti as the go-to source for reliable do-it-all (often plier-powered) products that last a lifetime.

This is kinda a big deal, and you will hear about it from many sources.

  2. This move by “Leatherman” making knives appears to be a competitive one with international knife manufacturers that use “MagnaCut”, e.g. MKM (Italy). The five knives have MSRPs at $300 or less which I believe is driven by the allure of the blade steel. I think the blade steel should be “CPM154” or other comparable steels by American-based knife manufacturers e.g. Hogue “Deka” CPM20CV (MSRP approx. $180). Personally, the “hollow grind” on the three folders does not appeal to me. The fixed blade knives get a “meh” . . . The “R&D” people at “Leatherman” can do better than these knives. Like the original “PST” in the early ’80s, I expect that “Leatherman” will continue to innovate and produce functional knives at a price point that will beat foreign manufactured knives.
