Pettybone was a blacksmith, located in Massachusetts. About 1802, he was granted a patent for the forge welding of steel using borax. This patent was much disputed by other blacksmiths who claimed to have been using the process thirty years earlier. Pettybone manufactured belt, and hunting knives.
