This company was originally Dorsey and Layman. Robert S. Dorsey and James T. Layman were the owners of this wholesale and retail hardware. They are first listed in the Indianapolis City Directory in 1866 at 64 East Washington Street. By 1873, the firm was Layman-Carey Company, composed of James T. Layman, Simeon B. Carey, and A.L. Clippinger. They were at 85-87 S. Meridian Street. By 1880, Harvey G. Carey had joined the firm, and Mr. Clippinger was no longer a principal. In 1900, Harvey Carey was no longer with the firm, and Samuel C. Carey was listed as a partner with S.B. Carey and J.T. Layman.
In 1905, J.T. Layman was president, J. Thompson Layman vice president, and Theodore D. Carey secretary and treasurer. They were at 111-115 S. Meridian. Layman-Carey used the trademark “Keen Edge.”
