This was originally a trademark of the Utica Knife & Razor Company. It was first used in 1924. In 1934, Otto E. Kraus started the Pal Blade Company in Chicago, Illinois, dealing in safety razors and blades.
The Pal Blade Company, and Pal Cutlery Company merged in 1939 to form the Pal Blade Company, Inc. at 595 Madison Avenue, New York City. Pal Cutlery Company had a factory in Plattsburg, New York in 1935, and made kitchen cutlery. There was also a period when this firm operated in Montreal, Canada. This was probably in the 1929-1935 period.
In 1940, Pal purchased the cutlery division of Remington Arms Company. They moved the equipment to a plant in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and began manufacturing pocket knives. They used the stock parts Remington had left over, regardless of marking. Some Pal knives will have Remington-marked blades in them both the circle and straight line markings.
This firm also made knives with the bullet emblem. These Pal bullets are in the same patterns Remington made. The Pal-marked bullet knives are very rare. The firm discontinued the “Pal Blade Co.” marking, and used the “Pal Cutlery Co.” marking in about 1945.
The factory in Holyoke was closed in 1953, and pocket knives discontinued at that time.
