This firm was founded by James P. Swain about 1840. The building had been a grist mill since before the revolutionary war. In 1840, James P. Swain acquired the property, then known as the Bronx Mill. He made screws and axles at that time.
In 1858, he began the manufacture of cutlery. Swain brought men from Sheffield, England to work in the factory. They closed sometime prior to 1898. An old ad reads: Dear Sirs, The undersigned, Manufacturers of PEN AND POCKET CUTLERY, are men prepared to sell to the trade a first class article, manufactured on the English system.
