Western was founded by H.N. Platts. They made all types of cutlery using their own marking and also made contract knives for hardware firms. Originally, they were known as the Western States Cutlery Company. This name was changed to Western Boulder Colorado about 1951.

In 1978, they moved to Longmont, Colorado. It was known as Coleman-Western in 1984. In 1991, they closed and were sold to the Camillus Cutlery Company of Camillus, New York.

Many of the early knives made by this firm are very rare. They always made an outstanding product. In 1977, Western started dating their knives. A letter was added under the USA. The dating system is: A=1977, B=1978, and so on.
