Gordon Roswell Woodward moved to Cairo, Illinois from St. Louis, Missouri in 1862. He began by working at Raynor & Company, and later the same year took over the business. He changed the name, at that time, to the Woodward Iron and Hardware Company. In 1901, Mr. Woodward sold the business to his employees. They continued until the early 1960s when they went out of business.
