For the past year, I have replaced my normal EDC (everyday carry) knife with a multi-tool. My job in the firearms industry requires more utility than a typical knife can provide, so for the last 12 months or so, I’ve been carrying a Leatherman Skeletool in my pocket.
I’ve owned and used a variety of multitools from Leatherman, Gerber, and SOG. They all performed well in their own way, but the Skeletool offered the best features for everyday carry. In that capacity, the Skeletool has terrorized cardboard, pried open stuck actions, tightened stock screws, held trigger pins in place, and perhaps opened a beverage or two. All of this eased the stress of not having the right tool for the job. However, while I believe the Skeletool has served me well, let’s evaluate it objectively and rate it across several categories.
I tried to replace my EDC with a Multitool for 30 days. I made it a week. I keep my Wave in my hip pack, as I like to have one with me, but I don’t carry it on my person.
