The Gerber LMF II Infantry has been assigned a new NSN 7340-00-098-4327.

This is a big deal for a company. An NSN ensures that a piece of kit is officially authorized for purchase with government funds. Apparently not attending SHOT Show hasn’t interrupted Gerber’s ability to secure such things.

  1. Once upon a time, I served as the “Repair Parts Petty Officer(RPPO)” for “M-Div” aboard the USS George Bancroft SSBN643 “Blue Crew”. My “RPPO” duty involved using “NSN” paper catalogs and the newest “viewable” invention: microfiche. Ego withstanding, I was pretty damn good at it (RIP, Joe Davis MM1(SS) who taught me the intricacies of the National Stock Number system.). Every system has its oddball part(s) and often, the needed part DID NOT have a “NSN”. The part number was called a “hoo-doo” and I don’t know why. I kept a separate “Hoo-doo” logbook. “Hoo-doo” stock numbers could look like ‘Scrabble’ tiles thrown onto a table with some numbers and often comic strip cussing: Hz#@!!349((/?>123URAscu+2. Usually, a “hoo-doo” was a replacement gasket or O-ring for the “Lithium-Bromide A/C” unit.

    1. entire parts diagramn explosion books on one floppy film. we had the entire kawasaki, ski doo/ moto ski (and some various obscure personal watercraft, wetjet etc.) and eventually obtained the ducati series. while the japanese and canadia stuff was well translated, the eyetralian was bad in five languages. a grommet in various lingos was gummistuck, rondelle, la ojal… it sort of got you in the ballpark but sometimes the item would be very proprietary and you needed to know maybe if it was fiber or had a steel lip or whatevs. so then there would be “anello di tenuta, ochiello. due ragazze picchiano coetanea sul bus per un panino: ‘c’e il ramadan, non puoi mangiare. poi aggrediscono l’autista.” and some how you just knew that this was more descriptive than “gasket.” so i’d call the como inn on ogden and the gal who answered would always translate it for me with a smile in her voice. might have to ask the cooks on the tougher ones. sadly, that restaurant and building are gone. it was spelled yacht but pronounced throat warbler mangrove.
