Hey there boys and girls, it is Weekend Open Thread time. This week’s opening meme comes to us courtesy of my buddy Jim Cobb. I had to chop it up because the caption got caught up when it was used as the “featured image” on the post.

We are in the process of giving away a couple of Ocaso Strategy knives in our weekly drawing. Del is Token holder #2, joining Stuart B.

I am really enjoying the one that I am reviewing, and Katie and Vince are going to add their thoughts to my review as well.  The remaining two will go to readers. It is a “two token” drawing, meaning that you need to be drawn twice to win. First winner gets first choice. Token-holders carry over to the second drawing, meaning the second person to get drawn twice gets the remaining knife.

Usual rules apply…you get up to 5 entries per week which are your comments and replies. If you are new to the blog, your first comments will be held in moderation until I approve them.

  1. Yesterday, I bought the “Outdoor Gear Razorlite 3.5” at the “J&S Pawn and Gun” store for $15. Why in the hell did I do that? Well, it was “NIB” with the six-pack of extra blades . .

    Recently, the “NEWSFEED” had a post on this “utility knife”. My comments were mostly negatively biased in view of my long-standing affection for the standard “Stanley 199” or similar utility knife that uses the standard trapezoid blade.

    This knife does have attributes. The Grivory body is comfortable. The thumbstuds are effective in opening the blade. The “push button” provides for easy blade changes. The “jimped” spine/blade holder is sturdy; and, the back-lock is solid. I was sort of impressed with the well-made ballistic nylon belt pouch.

    I will put it in my peddler’s bag. Pretty certain that I will make a small profit. Somebody somewhere will make use of it. I will stick to the “199”.

    1. What are your thoughts on the replaceable blades Hocky? Have never been able to wrap my head around the concept, however have seen numerous factory knives that have this feature.

      1. Del, the drop-point blades are 420J2-SS;and, they are “0.6 mm” thick (same as a standard trapezoid blade which is not SS). Function wise, I think the “Razorlite” blades are likely to break near the tip and/or at the junction of the “support spine” IF enough “wiggle” is exerted. These blades compare to an “X-acto” blade in my opinion; I have numerous “X-acto” blades and handles . . . use them often.

  2. I appreciate the backstory on “CMEAT”. . . “stylish cypher”, I reckon it fits. I have not read “Kerouac”. Do not know much about him. Next visit to the public library, I will look for “On the Road”.

    That experience in Rota was exceptional. I vaguely remember returning to the “Bancroft” the next morning . . . the “M” Div guys did not believe me until I showed them the official U.S.Navy “WAVE” skivvies stenciled “K.C.” and “C.J” . . . they made the patrol a lot more memorable!

  3. my guilty pleasure (never again) was heublin’s brass monkey, that funky monkey. there was some polar nights and mellow afternoons, riunite lambrusco and the girls all wanted mateus rose. chill a cella, “aldo!” my brother brings soco on our canoe trips. we drink everything else first,then he laughs when we have no choice but to partake.
    family of four, i could sure pack it down. two north and pulaski “burrito heaven” carne asadas, all but one square of an large eastern style special pizza. butch spallatoni (r.i.p.) could finish an entire edwardo’s large spinach soufflet pie or pepe’s tacos family taco platter. big boy, heart gave out. stouffer’s is tolerable (watch that salt) but oncor had al molinaro, “i’ll be over at six.” that crap’s terrible.
    pre teen pissing up a tree contests were a thing.
    name the band is the best collection of four frightening faces ever. no name is worthy. i guess f.a.s. might work.
    pope john paul is singing the meatmen’s “pope on a rope.”
    i have a 45 of that buff spring song, “for what it’s worth.”
    i read the rick roll yesterday, was too smeared from sunday to decipher. well done.
    i remember seeing cans of evaporated water (powdered?) for the military… was i duped all those years ago?
    all of our desks had the little chair connected, i remember it as “duck… and cover.”
    my mom tells of learning to drive a pre- war buick stick while being offered her first cigarette at ten. tanks got she quit.
    and what is it with anxious gals and endless murder documentaries?
    one of my b.i.l.’s has “enjoy every sandwich” attached to all correspondence. “roland the headless thompson gunner”… as a drunk he was amazing, sober…not so much.
    uff da, training kids to do my job… no shortcuts until after five years, minimum.
    in chickagoo that couch would have been destined for “durafab.” grandma was too frugal, she covered her “davenport” with dry cleaning bags.
    three of the locals took advantage of the ksf spydie pricing, bringing a sun and moon chappy (xhp) and a maniago (i was unaware) pattada (m390). good pricing; the smock, which i would have gone for, was only ten dollars off. figures.

      1. Stuart, it took me awhile to learn to read and understand CMEAT’s writing style. He has a certain laser focus and beat sense of humor that I’ve come to love and appreciate. And he’s spot on about hey, hey, hey Mateus Rose.

    2. Flash!! CMEAT sets new “WOT” record for “Total Words”, “Unique Abbreviations & Colloquialisms”; and, “Total Meme Analysis”.

      So far, I have figured out that “buff spring” is “Buffalo Springfield”, for what it’s worth . . . there’s something happening here . . . But, what it is ain’t exactly clear . . .

      “Mateus” . . . Rota, Spain – 1977. Enlisted Men’s Club on Naval Base. Hundreds of sailors drinking and rowdy; live band rocking the building . . . I see two ‘WAVES’ sitting at a table with a bottle of the Portuguese rose. I introduce myself and they invite me to join them. Studly submariner that I am, another bottle arrives and the cute, buxom blonde points her finger at the label and whispers, “Mate Us”. A Spanish taxi is called. I learned the phrase: menage a trois. Yes, CMEAT . . . ladies do want the “Mateus”.

      On the knife front, I got a “BUCK USA 285” at the pawnshop,”J&S Pawn”**, for $7. I have quite a few “BUCKS” in the peddler bag now. Mostly slip-joints in the “300 Series” and one automatic. ( **formerly known as “Washington Street Pawnshop).

      Got some weed control to finish. Heading outside . . .

      1. Hocky: ‘Mate-us’ – classic! Story with a happy ending too.
        CMEAT was the beacon for me to find this Knife Magazine community, having followed him for years over at TTAK. I’ve always enjoys his stylish cypher, though some days are more opaque than others. I first read Kerouac’s ‘On the road’ sober and just didn’t get it, then I tried it with some ‘tea’ … ahah!

  4. Firstly, Steve Nuckels presentation at the “Moran Forge” Saturday morning on putting 6 oz. leather over basswood to complete a wood-lined sheath was engrossing. This was “Part 2” of Steve’s seminar (“Part 1” was at the June monthly meeting). Steve covered all the steps in this process including an “embossing” technique where he uses a wire-applique epoxied to the basswood. This creates a bas-relief around which the leather is “tooled”. Bill Moran used this “raised” process to create snakes, lightening bolts and dragons . . . Oh My! (Reference to “Wizard of Oz”). Steve does this very, very well!

    On this week’s memes, I once shared a $1.59 bottle of “Night Train”, a delicious pear wine, in Saratoga Springs, NY, with a man I only knew as “Grasshopper”. He was a street-person in this small town known for Skidmore College and the Travers Stakes. That was my only experience with “Night Train”. “Boone’s Farm” and “Ripple” both sold for $0.99 per fifth or half-gallon (I do not recall . . .) around 1971, the year I turned “18”. This was abusive teenage drinking. Our brains were not fully developed. “MD 20/20” . . . it was called “Mad Dog”. The ‘A-bomb’ desk-shelter is a memory . . . 1st Grade at “Pangborn Elementary” (1959-60?), we had weekly drills: “Under the desk” in what is now called the “prepare for impact” or “crash position”. The “Twilight Zone” episode on the atomic bomb was shown . . . and the windows in the gym were filled with bricks. Now we can watch “Oppenheimer” . . . When I was cruising on patrol on the USS George Bancroft SSBN643 and a “Spin Up All Missiles” rang out on the boat’s 1MC (Intercom) followed by “This Is Not a Drill” . . . my only thoughts were “Is this real”?; and, . . . “Will we survive”?

    Enough doomsday stuff, Enjoy the knife life!

    1. Like Del, I enjoy your Moran Forge updates. So when do we get to see your wood lined leather sheath?
      Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill was a right of passage in my neighborhood. What were we thinking!!
      I was in kindergarten during the Cuban Missile We claimed under our desk for bomb drills. However-for tornado drills we went into the windowless hallway crouched low against the wall. Even then I recognized the hallway was a better place than under the desk! What were they thinking?

      1. Mark: My wood-lined leather sheath(s) are mostly un-embossed or tooled. They serve the function that Bill Moran indicates in the book, “Master of the Forge”: To protect a carbon steel blade from corrosion caused by “tanning chemicals”; and, to protect the body from wounds caused by the blade penetrating the leather**.
        (**Paratroopers carrying fixed blades in leather sheaths experienced wounds . . .)

  6. Who among us hasn’t eaten their sandwich which at recess? There were a couple of girls in kindergarten who looked like the real estate girl-neither shared! Lucky for me there were 3 other Marks in my class. Sharers all! (It was a popular name in 1957!)

      I do remember trading food, some really funny ones again Clay! I am okay, the only wild hogs I see are on 2 wheels!

      That couch looks very familiar… 🙂

      So does the job training; At 15 I asked the boss if I could run a skidder, he gave me my own landing and area for a week. Nobody else but me, pointed to the hillside and said to fill the landing up, which I did. The job was mine.

      Two weeks later I rolled the machine, easy mistake with no training. The mainline was tight and pulled me over due to too much line out. Never happened again!

  9. I had to read the “WOT” this morning before going to the “Moran Forge” for our monthly meeting. Laughed out loud with a few nose-burning moments when my hot, black coffee had to find an outlet!   10. Funny, I walked through those exact gates at London Heathrow Terminal 2 this morning on the way to catch my flight back home. I failed to see it then, but the meme will always skew how I read that.
