Samuel Mason and Sons moved their cutlery factory to Canton from New Brighton, Pennsylvania in 1871. Samuel Mason was a master cutler from Sheffield, England. He had previously started the Northfield Knife Company in Northfield, Connecticut, Binns & Mason in Rochester, Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Cutlery Company in both Rochester and Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and helped get the Beaver Falls Cutlery started.
He and his sons, Henry H. (b. 1846), William C. (b. 1848), and Joseph P. (b. 1850), then started Mason & Sons in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, and moved the company to Canton in 1871. The business failed, and they closed down in 1875. This company was a manufacturer of “Bowie” type knives, among other kinds of cutlery.
