  1. “Silky” caught my eye . . . an exotic dancer in Baltimore. Oh, that “Silky”; Those saws are really nice. Too much money for my needs. On another note, . . . My recent pawnshop excursions gained me a “Western / BOULDER, COLO. / MADE IN U.S.A.; Obv. tang “426” for $15. Rat-tail bolsters and jigged bone scales. Escutcheon is interesting . . . need to research it. Very good “walk ‘n’ talk”. Some wear on the clip blade (long nail pull) . . . a little “belly” gone due to sharpening; Spey and sheepsfoot blades a bit worn. Useful carry versus my normal Barlow when working outside.
    “Western” evolved from the knifemaking family of Charles W. Platts an emigre of Sheffield, England. His son, Harvey Nixon Platts married Debbie Case in 1892. She is the daughter of W.R. Case who worked for the Cattaraugus Cutlery Company with his sons: Russ; W.R; Jean; John and Andrew. “Cattaraugus” was owned by J.B.F.Champlin and his son, Tint. “Tint” was married to Theresa Case . . .
    Eventually, Charles Platts formed “C. Platts & Sons Cutlery Company” in Gowanda, New York circa 1896, then moved operations to Eldred, Pennsylvania.
    In 1900, Harvey Nixon (H.N.) Platts led the company when his father passed. “H.N.” and Russ Case travelled across the United States selling knives. “H.N.”s health declined due to “grinder’s consumption” and he moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1911. He established the “Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing Company” with knives being manufactured by New York Knife Company; Challenge; Utica; Valley Forge and W.R. Case & Sons. Around 1920, “Western” opened their manufacturing plant in Boulder. In 1940, “H.N.” retired and passed the company onto his sons: Harlow and Reginald. In 1950, “Western Cutlery Company” was formed. In 1978, “Western Cutlery Co.” moved to Longmont, Colorado. In 1984, “Crosman Airgun”, a division of “Coleman Corporation”, bought “Western”. In 1991,”Camillus Cutlery Co.” bought the whole shebang from an investor group. “Camillus” went bankrupt in February of 2007. The “100 years of Western Cutlery Company” was over.

    This “426” is somewhat of an enigma. The pattern number** is not shown in my reference book and neither is its “3 1/2 inch OAL” pictured. (The “3 7/8 inch OAL stockman is shown; but, it does not have the long nail-pull”. The escutcheon on the “3 7/8 incher” is a “bomb” . . . the “426” is more of an “fat arrowhead”.

    1. UPDATE: “All About Pocket Knives” reveals that the escutcheon is the “Federal Shield”. The “426” pattern marks the knife as post-1954 (“Western” did not etch/stamp pattern numbers until 1954). The “Federal Shield” with the long-nail pull dates the knife pre-1959. After 1959, “Delrin” replaced most bone-handled pocketknives handled in bone, e.g. Case, Schrade.

  2. A non-Scandinavian folding saw with pull-stroke and “7 teeth per inch” that does not cost $560: Corona 13″ blade-$15(Pawn shop buy, NIP (New In Package). Mediocre saws to avoid are GERBER and Camillus . . .

    1. And I thought Silky was proud of their folding saws! Well, I’m thinking that “looking for a gift for the impossible to buy for father or company CEO” doesn’t sound like a sustainable business plan for the custom folding saw market. I don’t recall reading about Gates, Musk or Bezos having a passion for yard work or bushcraft!
      I agree there is a wow factor to the Damascus blade, but I could splurge on a Silky or two, or buy several Coronas and still have some walking around money.
      I hope he sells a gazillion of these and proves me wrong. I’m out.
