Weekend Open Thread: Frying Retinas Edition

Hey everybody, you have made it through another week, and the Weekend Open Thread is here for your viewing enjoyment. Just try not to look directly at the memes.

Where will you be on Eclipse Day?

Maryville, TN was in the heart of the last one in 2017, and the kids got to see the totality.

They are now a freshman and 7th grader respectively.

They won’t get to see a total eclipse this time…

Question asked…

My money is on Darwin…

Don’t be this guy…

I confirmed that the dates are correct by visiting their various websites.

It really is next weekend…

Lehigh Valley Knife Show

Tonight’s musical guest is The Defiant. The Defiant is a punk/punk adjacent “supergroup” recently formed by a group of heavyweights. The band is fronted by Dicky Barrett, formerly of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Pete Parada -drums (Offspring), Greg Camp- guitar (Smashmouth), Joey La Rocca – guitar (The Briggs), and  Jonny Rioux – bass (Street Dogs).

I have been a Bosstones fan since college. I like Offspring, and was familiar with Parada. Street Dogs shared band members with Dropkick Murphys, Camp wrote the big 3 Smashmouth hits.  There is a lot of established talent in that group. I don’t know the whole story of how the others came to be in the band, but in the case of Barrett and Parada, they were kicked out of their previous bands for refusing to get the WuFlu vax.

Because nothing proves your punk bona fides like submitting to government vaccine mandates. Agree with Barrett/Parada or not, but either we have autonomy over our bodies or we don’t. The second song actually addresses the feeling of being hung out to dry for taking a stand. But more on that later.

There were a bunch of bridge memes in the topical pile, but I didn’t find many funny ones.

Baseball is still in the news.

I can’t wait to see how MLB tries to make this go away.

Narrator: “It won’t”.

It is still, and will always be “The Jake”. I don’t care how much money they pay the Dolans.

I thought it was pollen season. It is at my house…

That was Wednesday afternoon

He probably looked at the 2017 eclipse.

Winning a knife might cheer him up.

Congrats to Cmeat, as I just drew him for the second time. That gives him a second “token” and therefore he is the winner. I will endeavor ro send this more quickly than the last one.

Our next knife giveaway is an Adimanti Skimen by Ganzo. We haven’t covered Ganzo much, as they are a cookie cutter budget import brand (though of scary good quality for the price. The Adimanti brand is one of their sub-labels and I have actually been fairly impressed with this knife. Good action, solid construction, and reasonably distinctive design. Retail price is only $45, which is a function of its Chinese manufacture, but I would put it in the same class as the CJRB Feldspar in the best bang for your buck category.

This will be a single draw win. So I will pick from this week’s comments to give away the knife next week. Up to 5 comments or replies are your entries. If you are new to the blog, your first comments will be held in moderation until I can approve them. However, new commenters get double credit for each entry. So you have that going for you.

Good luck everyone.

Now on to more memes…

We don’t deserve dogs sharks.

You should have. And you should have expected this…

As I have done each week since October 7th, I am dedicating a small portion of this thread to stand up in support of Israel as they battle the genocidal terrorist group Hamas. Unfortunately, there was an mistake in targeting this week, resulting in the deaths of 7 foreign aid workers from the World Central Kitchen.

As the tweet says, this was a tragedy, not an atrocity. Mistakes happen in war, and Israel inadvertently killed non-combatants. Non-combatants were Hamas’s precise target when they broke the cease-fire on Oct. 7th.

Israel is a western-style democracy. They have been transparent about the mistake, and consequences are in progress. Two senior officers have been relieved of duty, and a 3rd has been formally reprimanded. I can’t say if this is adequate or not, but it is more accountability than the US showed when they blew up a car full of children in Kabul during the botched Afghanistan withdraw. No one has been disciplined to my knowledge.

From the BabylonBee:

GAZA — As the United States pledged to continue providing humanitarian aid and basic necessities to Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict with Israel, Hamas scientists are struggling to figure out how to make emergency food rations explode.

With all attempts thus far to weaponize the food rations for use in rockets and suicide bomber vests unsuccessful, Hamas leaders urged its brightest and most creative members to redouble their efforts to make the rations highly explosive.

“How are we supposed to kill Jews with this?” said one Hamas fighter. “Inshallah, we will keep working until we figure out how to turn this shelf-stable chili and macaroni into a deadly weapon! The United States keeps saying they are sending us help, but what are we supposed to do with things that don’t blow up?”

Besides, how can the Jewish people be “colonizers” of a land that they have been living on for more than 2000 years?

I look forward to retiring this section of the WOT, but I will not do so until Israel has declared an end to their operations.

We return to The Defiant for our second musical number.

The title “Where Were You” can be interpreted as a dig against the Bosstones, whose breakout song was “Where Did You Go?” (featured in the movie Clueless). Regardless, it is a song about being let down by folks you thought had your back for decades.

Definitely.  But my meme game is on point.

It is a finely calibrated process…

Time to get back to work…

Have a great Weekend everybody.
