Weekend Open Thread: Monkey Business Edition

    By H. Clay Aalders May 27, 2022

    Howdy Folks.

Thanks for your patience this week as my posting has been a bit thin. We got back from Pawley’s Island yesterday evening, and it is now a sprint to Blade Show. We have July Press Week as soon as we get back, so there is a lot to do in the coming days. That is if we all don’t die of monkeypox first.

I am not saying that I don’t trust the political, media, and medical establishments. Ok, I am saying I don’t trust the political, media, and medical establishments.

    Uh-oh…

Of all the archetypes to emerge during the WuFlu pandemic, the dancing tik-tok nurses were among the most grating.

    Moneypox. There, I fixed it.

Go away you malignant dwarf. Besides, we already know what is happening.

Not much is happening on the knife show front this weekend. Everyone is getting ready for Blade Show.

Stole that one from Josh Navarete. Looking forward to seeing him next week. Check out https://navarreteknives.com/ if you are so inclined.

Keep an Eye on our Events Calendar to stay in the know.

    Can’t argue with that.

I just drew Cmeat for the second time in our Dicerox Kalina giveaway. So I will drop that in the mail shortly. I have enjoyed reading the comments about the Lagertha. Those who have read my reviews over the course of several years will recognize the guarded nature of that one. You have seen me when a knife blows me away. The Dicerox knives didn’t, but they were solid and well made, and capable of performing all the tasks I illustrated. It is why I take so many photos in my testing.

Next up is the Gerber Wind River Caper. The Wind River line of Gerber knives are imported, but are highly functional. I like the ergonomics, and the waxed cotton sheaths are a nice touch. I am playing around with the Ulu myself, as I figure it is the most interesting to review. My son and I have been testing the drop point fixed blade, and it is a heck of a knife for the price. My only beef is the 7Cr steel. If they had gone with 8Cr, I would have no problems with this knife at all. That said, the edge has held up well through a lot of wood shaving and carving. I think my son will be hanging on to that one.

Only one draw necessary to win the Downwind Caper, but I will keep it open for two weeks. Blade Show is next Friday and I won’t be pulling a WOT together. So comment early and often. Because it is a 2 week drawing, you can enter 7 comments/replies over the course of the next couple of weeks. Otherwise the usual rules apply. If you are new to the blog, your first comments will be held in moderation until I approve them manually. After that you will be free to post at will.

Now, for the rest of the memes.

    Scarily Accurate.

Seems like a legitimate unit of measure.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

… still trying to work out if Gerber were making an honest effort or if the 7CR was just another humorous meme?

She is still here, looking longingly in the mirror for a role in life, thinking if slimming down her larger than average bevels would make her more alluring?

don’t tell anyone, but i would not blame you. aside from the amount of abrasive you will go through to do ~anything~ to that edge, i think the effort would be worthwhile as i’m not much of a scandi fan. clay said it wandered in food prep; closer to full flat should be an improvement. the steel is tough enough to deal.

Clay-not sure if you want us commenting here-it IS the weekend after all-or below you report from Blade. So, I’ll put it here. I genuinely enjoyed the report! I enjoyed the photos more. The smiles of friends who haven’t seen one another we’re the best! Those smiles made me smile.
I hope tomorrow is another great day for you! Looking forward to you post!
