Hey all…

Because of Mark and my trip to Rosecraft, and a mess of family stuff including a homecoming football game, I have not had a chance to pull together a WOT.

Never fear, we are lying low and watching football on Saturday, so the thread will be forthcoming.

Update:

Guys…I am sorry, but I am just not going to get to it this weekend. I will explain more next week.

  2. Seems I didn’t miss much, just back from a great hike in the Sierras. Lakeside camping, a few mosquitos, rum and ginger, a bunch of Brookie/Golden hybrid trout and a SAK Walker/Rainier Fastpak combo.

    2. More than one shore lunch, agree with Hocky – Great picture Stuart! Noseeums were pretty bad on my fishing trip North, small price for fresh fish and Dungeness crabs.

  3. “Come Monday” . . . in town, stopped by “First Cash Pawn” on the Dual Highway. I have found some nice knives there. Landed a “Schrade 160 OT, “Mountain Lion”, 1978-80; NIB w/sheath. The aroma of 40-year old leather was intoxicating . . . It will partner with its brethren fixed blades in the “peddler bag”.

    I bought a CRKT “Tribute” at a garage sale for $3. Etched “CENTOFENTE/TRIBUTE” on blade; “6055” on tang. Interestingly, to me, as I did not know that CRKT produced this knife. I own the Spyderco “Memory” which was a tribute to Frank Centofante**. I met his wife, Sue; and son, Mark, at the Atlanta “Blade Show”in 2015. I bought a “Mark Centofante” carbon-fiber handled lock-back that day. Enjoyed a wonderful conversation with them.

    Regarding the CRKT “Tribute”, my research revealed that the blade is 7Cr17MoV; and, the scales are micarta. I could not find a “China” etch . . . so, I will ignore my neg-bias to “Chinese steels”, e.g. 2Cr20MoV. I like this knife for it’s clean lines which is a fitting tribute to Frank Centofante’s designs. It rides well in my pocket.

    1. Del, “Barney” sold me the “Ruana” a few months ago. I do not know the model or pattern. It had a short stag handle (3 fingers) and a clip point blade. I may have a photo of it. It had the original leather sheath. The person who bought it was most likely a dealer, so it might show up on eBay. Like the Moran-sheathed “Hackman” that Barney sold me, I made some knife money. I ONLY bought two knives at the “Mason Dixon” show. The “John Britt” and the “Case Whaler”. The “Ruana” and the “Hackman” have me sweetly funded for the “Moran Show”!

    Heat has broken here. Finally. A week ago the Thur, Fri, Sat temps were 107, 110, 102. It’s currently 79!
    Jason, you’re a beer guy-why are there so many Octoberfest celebrations in September? I’m not complaining, just observing there are several the next couple of weekends. (I just wish they continued into October!)
    I may just wander into one or two! Heading out.

      Oktoberfest originally took place in the 16-day period leading up to the first Sunday in October. In 1994, this longstanding schedule was modified in response to German reunification. As a result, if the first Sunday in October falls on the 1st or the 2nd, then the festival runs until 3 October (German Unity Day). Thus, the festival now runs for 17 days when the first Sunday is 2 October and 18 days when it is 1 October. In 2010, the festival lasted until the first Monday in October (4 October), to mark the event’s bicentennial.

      1. chicago has maifest and oktoberfest in lincoln square. both dates crept towards warmer weather as the years went by, june and september had more consistent turnout.
        still one more to go at st. alphonsus coming up.

  7. Saturday morning. September 16th, 0600 hrs: Knife business went well yesterday at the “Mason Dixon Knife Club (MDKC)” show. Five “Moran Foundation” makers and members had tables. I reduced my “peddler bag” inventory by approximately 20%; I hope to downsize another 30% today. I sold a “Rudy Ruana” for a tidy profit. Bought a “Case XX, 1199 SH R , Whaler (Lightening SS, 8 dot = 1982) because I wanted it. Had some “bites” on the “Billy Watson” pipe hawk . . . The $1,000 price tag seemed reasonable, I reckon.

    Met some new knife people. Knife shows are a lot of fun. Hocky

      1. My memory says, “Jason K. Your desire is a “six dot . . . 1974”. Close? My “1982 (8-dot) has a “Moby Dick” etch on the blade. I will contact my “Whaler” resource in Virginia re your pining desire.

        1. I do not make, nor unmake, nautical knots much anymore. The knots that I use frequently are square, figure-8 and a bowline. I still wear lace-up boots and sneakers . . . I double knot’em so that my jean cuffs don’t work’em loose. My “new” Case XX “Whaler” will see use as a rope cutter. The bail allow me to hang it on a nail.

          1. multiple half hitches all summer. no need for a spike to undo those, but that knife looks weird without one. i mean, it’s a rope cutter.
