Hey all, happy Friday the 13th. This isn’t the first time I have used Triskaidekaphobia as my theme, but it is hard to avoid the memes on a very memeable day. And with sequels running into the double digits, I can keep using it for WOTs to come.

He needs more “flare”.

I feel badly that I am not there, not that I have ever been to Blade West, but at the same time it seems pretty tame compared to Atlanta. I am still trying to figure out if I am going to try to go to SHOT this January. At any rate, if you are in the Salt Lake area…

As we have discussed in a couple of newsfeed posts, the Hamas massacre of Israelis last weekend is front of mind, and while it is too soon for much in the way of humor, there are a couple of memes that crossed my feed this week that I wanted to share.

 

There is no moral equivalency between those that use innocents as shields, and those that seek to shelter the innocent.

 

If Hamas laid down its weapons there would be no war. If Israel laid down its weapons there would be no Israel. And finally, this is actually amusing.

I guess all is not bad.

Tonight’s music selection is relevant to the Israel situation. Matisyahu is an Orthodox Jewish Reggae musician with a fascinating backstory. His music is phenomenal. I will share some of his more upbeat stuff another week. But if you can’t wait, look up “King without a Crown”. You won’t be sorry.

One Day addresses the Israeli/Palestinian conflict directly. Beautiful and poignant.

I am not optimistic about the near term. But I fought the urge to pick Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction”. I hope we aren’t that screwed.

Changing gears, I wanted to give a shout out to Cmeat. A couple of years ago he sent me a Zebra telescopic pen. I love it and ordered a couple of more recently.

They aren’t quite the same, but they will work when the one Cmeat sent me eventually dies. Thanks buddy. And sorry to hear about your friend. May his memory be a blessing.

  2. The latest on Spyderco “compression lock” . . . I went back to the pawn shop and took a closer look at the “Shaman”. As Clay commented, the physics of having the compression lock “on top” makes sense. For me, a “rightie”, closing the blade allowed for the blade to drop freely which I liked. I understand being a southpaw makes this action more than awkward. I feel comfortable with the Axis-style lock that Clay embraces. My GERBER “Bolt Action” by Blackie Collins is effective. The “Triad” lock by Demko used on larger knives like Cold Steel’s “MaxScout4” is the ultimate in my opinion.

    Anyway, that “Shaman” is still $199.99. Those laser-engraved scales are still a mystery. I am thinking of contacting Spyderco to solve the mystery.

  5. i don’t care for slasher films, i’m sure i saw the first in most series. the scary movie franchise i enjoyed.
    i saw nina hagen (first time at the park west) open for the cure at the bismark. they had lost their edge by then.
    there is a bob ross segment in every episode of hbo’s hardcore t.v. where he is tattooing nakey girly butts. they never reissued it, but some clips are on utoob.
    i like the baby stroller message. traditionally correct, although this time they had a lot of ar stuff from afghanistan.

    matisyahu is what wifeys been saying for 20yrs. she’s mad that it took the knife blog for me to listen.
    oscar meyers is clever. and after lodging enough complaints, it is the wiener mobiole again. for four months they tried making it the (woke) frankmobile.
    that’s a grest pumpkin face. wifey has severe pareidolia, she sees faces. she says teslas are soulless due to lack of face.

    clay, the original zebra collapsible pens were known as expandz. they’re on ebay from hongkong and england for some reason. there is one guy in illinois with one for $14. when i realized they were discontinued i bought a box of a dozen. they take the standard zebra “F” refill. and i read that there is an adapter to use the “D” refills.
    found out later that our octegenarian “tour guide” (he knew the wisconsin rustic roads evry way) passed the same day as my saw him everyday guy. two huge losses. extra crappy. they keep popping into my head. eh, la.

    1. “Nuckels” and I had some front porch time recently. He has a strong focus on creating useful knives with 2-3 inch blades. His handles flow with imagination. I got my eye on two or more of his Moran Show offerings.

    Blade Show West would be a cool show to attend, maybe next year? SHOT was a great time when I went, a bit overwhelming at times

  8. “Nuclear Power Plant and Spider Farm” equals “Arachnophobia” (1990). During the “Cold War” in which I served, Submechanophobia plagued the minds of the Soviet leadership: “We know that YOU are out there!”. Speaking of ionizing radiation: Alpha*, Beta, Gamma, Neutron**. “Them!” (1954) was antsy (Myrmecophobia). (*Do not eat plutonium, an Alpha emitter. **Neutron radiation is a bit funky depending on its “speed”. “Slow neutrons” do not escape from a reactor’s core. “Fast neutrons” turn your innards to mush.)

    Lastly, I saw a Spyderco “Shaman” with a CPM M4 blade and a highly-etched metal handle* (not Damascus) at a pawn shop. Excellent condition, no box. $199.99 was a non-starter for me (MSRP $320). I did look it up out of curiosity. Beefed up “Native”. (*G-10 is shown on the Spyderco website as the handle material).

          I’ve not tried a compression lock, but it seems you give up tang comfort and looks for fidgitiness, poor swap IMHO.

          1. I reckon that I will check out the “Shaman” to eyeball the compression lock. I, too, have not seen, in person, Spyderco’s compression lock. My first cursory look at this knife’s locking mechanism indicated that the “liner lock” was “on top” vs. “underneath”. Okay . . . Seemed functional after a few opening-closing cycles. Accessible without inverting the knife for closing. “Tang Comfort” sounds like a “Slow, Comfortable, Screw”* (*Cocktail made with Sloe gin, Southern Comfort; Vodka and OJ.) The ladies in Spain liked these . . . Rota Rootin’!! Aaarghh!

          2. I have a Spydie Para3 and it is a compression lock. I understand how the physics make it stronger than a liner lock and less prone to deformation. I just can’t get used to where it is. I really think the Axis lock and its multitude of derivatives is the best all around lock for an EDC folder. If nothing else than it is ambidextrous. I can use a liner lock or framelock meant for a righty with my left hand, but a compression lock lefty is even more awkward than that.

    3. shaman is weird, i haven’t messed with a “compression” lock yet, i think it works backwards somehow, i’ve read it didn’t revolutionize anything. but that exposed tang when folded kills it for me.
