Hocky’s Corner – SVKC Finds

Hey all,

Regular readers frequently discuss recent acquisitions in the comment section, and sometimes they send me photos of what is being discussed. Here are a few that our friend Hocky sent in.

This is the elk antler, Damascus guard and buttcap, knife I bought from Bruce Ball at “SVKC”.  My good friend, Sid Barnhart, is making a sheath for it. Sid sent me this photo because he has had the knife since the show on April 1st and au wanted a photo.
. . . The measuring tape on close-up reveals “MADE IN CHINA”.
Sid knows my feeling regarding China, especially in the world of knives.  This made me laugh . . .
I wanted to share it with you.
(Oh, I gave Sid a “MADE IN USA” tape )
Bruce Ball knife gained at “SVKC” show.
It needs to be re-etched due to Kydex sheath marring the blade. Sid Barnhart doing the refinish and fashioning a handle and leather sheath.
Note: Not “MADE IN CHINA”

    So cool to have Clay showcase your treasures, along with the story. Both are great looking, the design of the damascus looks interesting, can’t wait to see what it looks like when Sid is finished with it!

      1. Chad makes some nice steel, I am making a folder with some of his stainless damascus right now, great material.

        I have never been a fan of kydex, so many friends use it, must be missing something?

        So happy Clay posted “Hocky’s Corner”, love it!

        1. Kydex will scratch and mar just about any steel. I understand your view of this thermoplastic. “Mirror” finish . . . On a tactical level, Kydex fits the purpose. On another note, I really like the look and smell of leather!

  3. Hocky, I like Sid’s sense of humor! Nice looking blade. That second one looks like it would be quite handy (size and blade shape), but I’m afraid I’d have a hard time using something that pretty!

    1. Hey Mark, Sid “LOLed” when I gave him feedback on the “MADE IN CHINA” meas. tape. It wasn’t intentional he assured me. Sid and I went to “Intro to Bladesmithing” at Haywood Community College, Clyde, NC in September 2014. We shared some “Popcorn” Sutton moonshine; and, went to Tennessee to see “Dollywood”. We just drove through the town and on into the Smokey Mountains. Sid spent a good amount of time (. . . and $$) panning for gold and gems at a roadside tourist trap! I think he sieved some emeralds. Sid is an excellent knife maker who crafts little knives to chef’s knives. I got a few of his lil’ ones . . . fixed blades with leather sheaths.
