For nearly two centuries, the Wharncliffe blade design has remained a staple of the knife community.

While the function has evolved from a whittling knife to more of a self-defense or EDC purpose, the Wharncliffe continues to be a useful tool.

A few weeks back, I wrote about the History of the Wharncliffe, and now I’m taking it to the next step with a look at the best production knives with Wharncliffe blades.

I’m capping the list at 20, although I will undoubtedly be missing a few essential additions, so let me know in the comments.

I know they are trying to sell you the knives that they picked, but the list covers the classics. The Leek and Yojimbo among them.

  1. Yep, the “Edgemont Reservoir” has some cracks in it. Still holds water . . . The Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) drained it in 1972 after Hurricane Agnes hit. When it was empty, removing a couple of “early” cars and trucks; as well as a boiler and the run-of-the-mill “still parts” took some effort. A couple of bones, probably deer, maybe bear . . .non-human were seen. Anyways, the “ACE” modernized the spillway and reinforced the earthen berms. The cool mountain springs on the Shaw and Warner properties refilled the reservoir. The snapping turtles and frogs and other creatures returned. A good many people who NOW live in the Smithsburg area do not know that the Edgemont Reservoir is a primary source of their drinking water. No longer is there a reservoir watchman. As a kid, my cousins and I would pass the time skipping stones on the smooth waters. We would gig frogs. Yep, I had a lot of good times up and down Warner Hollow Road.

  2. I am a “Wharnie”. Actually, on my mother’s side, I am a “Warner”. My Mom grew up on “Warner Hollow Road” above the “Edgemont Reservoir”. I spent the time of my youth in the late ’50’s through the 1960’s enjoying the woods and its natural accessories: its streams and springs; the wildlife and all the wonders of bugs, worms and crayfish. My Mom’s brothers: “Bud”, “Head”, “Pill” and sometimes: George, awed me with their skills as hunters. All of them were master stonemasons. All of them made knives. Knife blades were fashioned from worn-out sawmill blades; crosscut saws, files and other “good steel” that could be hardened. Blade shapes ran the gamut from butcher to hunter to “that will work”. They made “cooking knives” for my grandmother, “Mom Warner”, and for their wives, too. Most of these knives were full-tang paring knives with oak or walnut handles fixed on with pins (aka “finishing nails”). “Mom” Warner liked a sharp tip on her parers. She did not waste any part of a potato, carrot or other vegetable she grew in her huge garden. I watched her dig the “eyes” out of a potato; watched her peel the “skin” real thin and watched her as she took the peelings and pared out that last sliver of “meat” from the skin. “Mom” born and raised 13 children as a widow since 1945, so “waste not want not” was what I learned from her and my Mom.

    “Mom” and Mom’s parers were “Warnies”. I have one which was my Mom’s, which was her “Mom’s”. Most treasured of my knives. I use a modern era wharncliffe.

      warner gap hollow dam (1902) determined structurally compromised. consequently, the edgemont reservooir has been drained.
      a “high hazard” rated dam where failure would cause loss of life.
      clarence flook is concerned.

      the only true wharny i have is the dicerox. i have a leek, an insingo, a swindle and maybe more, but they all have a bit of sweep to them. i prefer it. the true ones are all tip or gasket scraper.
