Hello fellow People of the Knife. Our October issue has left the printer and will be arriving in subscriber mailboxes shortly. It is not the first time we have run a cover without an actual knife on it, but it doesn’t happen often. I love what our Graphic Artist Katie came up with. Mark took the color shots on a recent trip to Alabama Damascus, and Katie merged it beautifully with a vintage shot.

 

The article is great, as are the other feature articles this month, I personally really enjoyed the Buster Brown article by Dennis Ellinsen. Matthew Parkinson is insightful as always, Jamin has a great feature on veteran and knifemaker Fermin Lopez, and Frank Karl does an excellent job as always when reviewing the TOPS Steel Eagle.

H. Clay Aalders is a lifelong edged tool user. He spent the past 20 years as a woodworker and fishing guide in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Tennessee.   1. I got the October “Knife” yesterday. That made me remember that I had not “opened” the September issue . . . It was buried under a bunch of knives next to my La-Z-Boy. So, I enjoyed “September” while watching the Orioles move closer to the AL-East Division title.

    Del Corsi’s solid article with lots of photos on Tyler Turner was well told. I grasped that Turner grew up on that Missouri farm learning about life and respect for others. His affinity for slip-joints has my interest. Bill Moran grew up on a farm in Lime Kiln, MD named “Gayfield”, just a bit south of Frederick. “Bill” made knives from his father’s plow shares and saw blades. A friend of “Bill”, Ed White II, is a knife maker who uses vintage Nicholson “Black Diamond” files (“Made in USA”) to fashion a blade. I read that Tyler Turner did that, too. Excellent article.

      Really nice to hear you enjoyed reading about Tyler Turner Hocky! He certainly did learn some values growing up on the farm. Just a terrific artist and one heck of a great person to chat with. I really enjoyed hearing about that first knife show he attended.
