Weekend Open Thread: Headed South Edition

    By H. Clay Aalders July 15, 2022

    Hey everyone…

Since the world seems to be heading south in the figurative sense, I am going to load up the camper and head south myself. Headed to Ware Shoals, SC for the weekend, to Dogwood Dan’s place, aka Camp Morning Wood.

Actually, just my Taco (Tacoma) with an old Starcraft pop-up in tow. I am a decade or more away from even considering an EV. Until then…

Gas prices are only part of it…

    Ouch.

There really is very little hope for us as a specie…

Frankly, this seems like a better solution…

    Nothing left to do but…

Or you could go to this weekend’s knife event…

    ABS New England Hammer-In

Keep an eye on the Events Calendar for the latest.

This is not “funny” per se. but I agree with it…

There is only one source of emission-free energy that can scale to the needs of a modern economy. Sorry Nevada, you get brothels and gambling, you get Yucca Mountain. It is a fair trade. All the birds that won’t fall from the sky as turkey burger thank you.

    End of rant.

Cue my favorite meme of the week…

That makes me chuckle every time I see it.

I don’t really have anything more of a topical nature.

OK, that was a bad pun on my part.

I guess I will clear the decks of this week’s drawing before unloading the rest of the meme stash.

May we have the envelope please…

Hocky gets a token for the Red Horse Knives Hell Razor.

Usual rules apply…You need to be drawn twice to win the knife. There are now 4 token holders – Steve T, David McCarty, Hocky, and Stuart B.

Up to 5 comments or replies count as entries, and if you are new to the blog, I will have to approve your first comments before they post. After that they will show up as soon as you submit.

    On with the rest…

    Probably need some of this…

It goes to 11. You can find it in the Eternal Pain Aisle.

Speaking of eternal pain, I am probably going to Hell already, this just gets added to the ledger.

There are bad dads, and bad dad jokes…

I really should apologize for that.

And a few Pall Malls smoked as well.

According to a friend who guides in the keys, cocaine bales are referred to as “Square Grouper”. It is not common, but not rare either.

That is not the case with my wife, but the next one is spot on for my family…

    Still shitty…

    Peace was never an option…

    truth…

This will not be the case in a Taco towing a camper…

That is about it for tonight. I am going to get rolling on another one of my diabolical plans…

    Or get rolling south.

    Burn on Everyone…

“Because I let you.” – Exactly, as I prepare to roll on the Harley at first light tomorrow morning to a Hammer-In a couple hours away, which will take me less than an hour and a half! 🙂 Great job as usual Clay, the cop one lit me up! Congratulations to Hocky on getting his name drawn, not sure why but that blade on the Razor is a sharp looking design. A twenty dollar bill won’t fill my Softail tank when it is empty, my first MC had me getting change from a five dollar bill. Have a great weekend everyone!

Hocky, congrats on chip holder status!
Family means nothing in Uno. Truer words were never spoken!
Del-Do you see a parang influence in the Red Horse? I kinda do. I like the twist (bend) on the clever style blade.
I just came up to hydrate and consume some calories. I’m battling ‘Rona. I figure I can sleep longer than it can replicate. I’m heading back to bed. Stay safe everyone!

Hope the battle is short Mark. You might have something there on the Red Horse, kind of a flare like the Golok Machete. I am really pulled to this knife at any rate. And I totally agree on the “Uno” comments, our daughters were always upset, one game that I never let them win! Heal fast!

The “Boones Farm” is really funny too, I mean the neck muscles to balance the two feet high hair-do is mind boggling. Can you imagine sitting behind her at a concert, Hair Band concert I guess!

Del – I’m driving up to Canada later this year and I was trying to figure out Canadian knife laws – so any fixed blade and/or any folder that needs two hands to open, seems to cover it. So if I take the thumb stud off my Dozier I should be good to go, or should I go full SAK/Opinel?

          Hey Stuart.

I am not sure about the border guards, or how they interpret the laws. Every folder maker I know has a thumb stud on their knives, never heard of any problems at shows or on the news about this? A local character/knifemaker in our city used to ride his rat bike Harley around with a Samuri sword on his back. He never had a problem. Never heard of anyone getting in trouble for a thumb stud. Again, if that is the way the law reads, the border people might be more apt to enforce it. Mostly I have heard of people forgetting about their firearms in the vehicle, or if coming hunting failing to report the rifles in the camper or something. Are you driving through B.C. ? Coffee is always on, and a cold one or two as well! I can throw a rock and hit the Trans Canada Hwy. from my place.

Del – thanks for the info, good to know. I am heading to my Godsons wedding in Edmonton, up via Glacier NP, not sure which way we are coming back down, but I’ll let you know if we BC it across the Rockies

I just got a new Mora No.1 classic. their new take on the old traditional shape, but with stained handles and a much improved sheath. The No.1 is just 3″ and only 2oz (inc. sheath). Really handy little blade.

Thank you all for your well wishes. I’ve got to admit I was nervous when the test was positive. 65, high blood pressure and a suppressed immune system with the kidney transplant are not good underlying conditions to have! I did get a monoclonal antibody treatment earlier this week. That was a blessing. Today it’s like a switch got flipped. I’m feeling much better! Still not 100 percent, and a Covid headache that won’t quit, but SO much better.
So take heart! If I can beat this strain given my health issues, this variant, while very contagious, can be beaten by just about anyone.

And I’ve had an ear worm all day “the kinda music just soothes my soul! (Thanks Clay) The tunes even popped into a dream or two! Heading back to bed. Carry on!

Mark, I hope you get over the headache.
I had covid the last week of January and have had a headache since then.
I been to the Dr. twice. I have another appointment in 2 weeks. Hopefully she can do something.

Monday morning . . . Breaking news! “Hank Warren Hockensmith” entered the world on Saturday, July 16th at 0147 hrs. Weighing in at 8 lbs 11 oz and standing “21 inches tall”, he is our second grandson.

Been busy with the “Moran School”. We had an all-hands on deck this past Saturday. Putting together the forging stations in addition to grounds keeping. I got the lead on restoring “Bill’s Outhouse”. “Barney” (aka Aubrey G. Barnes, MS-ABS) loaned me his vintage 1967 photo of the “privy” taken by the late Jim Phillips. I want to match the color of the paint . . . and “Barney” is going to make a new “Moran half-moon face” for the door.

That’s about it for now, “Hocky”

Outstanding news! Welcome Hank! My local Lowe’s can match just about any color you can bring in. I’ve seen people bring in flowers, photo’s and clothes as color samples. I bet you’ll do just fine with your search! And have privy shipshape in no time!

Hey Hocky; Congratulations on the new Hockensmith family member! Sounds like you had a really great weekend. And you are now one of the token holders for that sweet looking Red Horse knife. Have a great week. Just a side note to the mirror finishing piece you mentioned before, SRJ is putting his logo on the two blades today, he soldered the guards too. Then they are headed North, along with the Red Stag sales we purchased for glueing, sheaths, and my logo. Too cool!

Looking ahead, I am customizing two small ball peens into forging hammers for “Axel Anvil” and “Hammerin’ Hank” . . . I am appreciative of having gained a “token” for the Red Horse Knives Hell Razor. It is an interesting design. You folks know that I am a knife traditionalist; that is, with few exceptions, I carry and use the knives I own. That being said, I relinquish my “token” back into the hat and respectfully ask Clay to “redraw” it; and, should my name be drawn this week to again “redraw”.

Made me laugh: “Stool Bus” and “Boone’s Farm”
