It is Friday. Again.

Groundhog Day was this week. In case you missed it.

Phil saw his shadow, which means that there are 6 more weeks of memes.

Actually, escaping the gravitational pull of home is my bigger challenge on a regular basis. Once I am out, I am ok.

I am glad that I am a part of the last cohort who learned how to do things analog, before everything went digital.

 

 

Digital does have its advantages though. I was able to go to youtube and show my son the incident in question, where Ventura got drilled by a pitch, charged the mound, and proceeded to get his ass whooped by 46 year old Nolan Ryan. Classic. I remember seeing the original highlight on Sportscenter the morning after.

  1. I only get “WAPO” on Sundays for the coupons. (I haven’t figured out digital coupons!). I liked Gene Weingarten’s humor column in their Sunday magazine, too. BUT, they dropped “Gene” because he wrote an “offensive” article about “Indian cuisine” (sub-continent “Indians”) specifically targeting “curry”. Basically, he opined that the only thing “India-ists” eat are 200 varieties of curry.

      moved from humboldt park to westridge on devon as a tyke. very solid star of david ‘hood back then. for some time now that stretch has turned indo- paki and has an honorary street rename of gandhi margh. weird voltage electronics, reams of sari material (“i’m royal sari…”) and countless restaurants. the indian ones are veggie (lotso lentils) curry and the paki ones meat (tandoori chicken baked in foil) centric curry, all fiery spice. more push starts and pull starts than new delhi. amazing. and the assyrian gangsters, who’ve been there longer, terrorize them to no end.
      one eatery is named “mysore woodland” which cracks me up. another, essence of india has managed to not attract my business, i don’t want to know.

      1. CMEAT: I reckon that “repeat WAPO” was a glitch in the “Knife” ether-sphere. “Double taps” are effective, . . . for “Reacher”.

  2. we need more johnny quest memes. race bannon, hadji and bandit. no idea why i was so enthralled with that show; young and dumb.
    i have yet to be wordled. and i’m still curious as to why the last one was germanic.
    all that zelda stuff was after we had abandoned caleco and intellivision. bought a sega dreamcast for my buddies kid way back, pretty impressive. mystified as to why they abandoned consoles for software only.
    we had a crap ton of fun with the granturismo franchise. the kid went on to fps stuff, i’m a level 46 on gtsport. still don’t have a ps5…
    there is a song by a boston band dogzilla that contains the line, “you have found the scarab of ra. this item has no use.” for sure an early gaming reference.
    the card catalog would send you down rabbit holes just as futzing with a search engine will. and how about aggrandizing a list of newspapers and magazines by calling it the reader’s guide to periodical literature.

  4. Ryan beaned Ventura who then charged the mound. Ryan grabbed Ventura in a headlock and commenced to punch him several times. Not sure if Ryan punched him 6 times, or if Venture received 5 punches and got hit by the pitch.

  6. “Free” knife show in Boaz, Alabama! Heading to “Google Maps” . . . got to find an airport, Hagerstown to ???? . . . hitch a ride to the Beulah Baptist Church and get some lunch at the “Bluegrass Gospel Picking Concession”, Yee-haw! . . . or, I can tour the thrift shops here in Hagerstown. I have gotten some decent USA-made knives recently, e.g. TOPS “HOG 45” and the “Fieldcraft – BOB”. My “peddler’s bag” is filling up. Hopefully, the “Spring of 2022” will see some regional knife shows in my area like the “Shenandoah Valley Knife Club” in Harrisonburg, VA.

    Did anyone know that the “ground hog” is the largest member of the squirrel family?

    1. I did not. The sum total of my groundhog knowledge is 1) they are also known as woodchucks and whistle pigs!
      I should know more considering Groundhog Day is the anniversary of the day I met my wife! Second semester of our freshman year, 1976. Been together ever since.

      1. JASONK: The “BOB” is “For Sale”. I have no need for it. Just wanted to “feel it” in my hand. I may keep the HOG 4.5 and carry it in my ’08 F-150. Let me know via e-mail if your interested.

    3. We’ve got a home town snowboarder, Sean FitzSimons (my attorney’s son), competing in Beijing. Apparently strapping skies on an 18 month old toddler has some benefits. The man made snow there is not popular and proving to be a challenge.

      1. I read an article in the “Washington Post” about “man-made” snow. The stuff is “spherical” not like a real snowflake. Pretty much its “ice balls”. Slicker than frozen snot . . . MORE TRACTION! WE NEED MORE TRACTION!

        3. Ice balls! I spent an hour Saturday trying to clear my front walk after the ice storm. It was 2 inches of “ice conglomerate”. Ice balls compacted on ice balls! Very slick, and the edges were surprisingly sharp. Cut my fingers a couple of times picking up chunks and tossing them into the ice covered front yard.. I sure hope the man made stuff at the Olympics isn’t similar.

    How about those ‘Commanders’ though! How did that fail not make the meme stack this week?

      1. “S23T”: I have no idea how “Commanders” came to be the moniker for the “WTF”s. “Swamp Rats” is catchy! Regarding “rats” a local school, Williamsport Middle School, had the nickname: “River Rats” due to the Potomac River bordering Willliamsport. A few people felt that the nickname was derogatory towards the locals and hounded the pansy-assed school board to change it. I think the school is considering: “Water Skeeters”, “Bass’s (. . . or simply “Bass”); “Mosquitos” . . . “Baits”; “No See’ums”; “Gnats” and a few others. I don’t have a stick in the fire.

          1. “Commodes”, too. “Commodores” got some late votes . . . Lionel Ritchie volunteered to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” on opening day. Half-time hits include: “Easy” (, , , we can’t stand the pain), “Brick House” ( . . . accompanied by the “Commando” cheerleaders) and “Three Times a Lady” (. . . Thank you Dan Snyder!).

            I submitted an entry, “Skins”, . . . I reckon it sounded too prophylactic.

            Rootin’ for “Team USA Biathalon’ers”. Shooting and skiing . . . oh, boy.

      2. biathlon: i remain intrigued by the toggle action rifles employed in this activity. i would guess anschutz produces most of them, but i think izh baikal makes them as well. the russky ones are now hard to find due to embargoes and the teutonic stuff is always way spendy.
        eh, la. at least it’s satisfying to watch them flip ’em back and forth.

  9. I think Phyllis should go on Dr. Phil and get to the bottom of things with these issues with Punxsatawney Phil, after all it’s chronic at this point in time! And those crazy Canucks, wondering if that why the latest double edge daggers I made sold so fast? Always make sure the finger prints are wiped off before shipping!!! And Nolan Ryan, you have to know that anybody that can throw like he could, has a heck of a right! No football, but have managed to see a few good Lacrosse matches from Vancouver lately. Saturday they Warriors play Panther City from Fort Worth, Texas. They play 7:00 PM at Rogers Arena. (NLL on ESPN) Have a great weekend everyone!
