Howdy folks.

I am going to blaze through this since we are up against Press Day and I am way behind. But I don’t want to leave y’all hanging.

As far as Ivermectin, I don’t have a horse in that race….

Like everything these days it has to get political. Ivermectin is actually a human drug too. In fact a Nobel Prize in Medicine was given for its use as an antimalarial in Africa. There are legitimate trials for its use with Covid in Japan. Rand Paul is right when he says it is hatred for the Trump that is blocking research here.

That said, the people buying it at Tractor Supply are morons.

Only one Knife Show this weekend but it is an important one. The Usual Suspects Network (USN) Show is in Vegas.

HAve you heard what is happening in Australia? Holy Cow. They are forcing people to download an app, and when they text you you have 15 minutes to send them an geotagged selfie that you are where you are supposed to be. For crying out loud, 1984 was a cautionary tale, not an effing instruction manual.

  1. “SAK”. Yes, I got a “Super Tinker” for $2.50 at a favorite thrift store, “Hope Center”, yesterday. Excellent condition, toothpick & tweezers . . . 14-functions . . . including a “multi-hook”. I look at this “hook” and wonder, “What is the purpose of this on a “tinker’s knife?”. Re “SAK”s, “KNIVES 2021”, “A Classic Never Goes out of Style” by Evan F. Nappen, Esq., pg. 177, is a good read on the venerable “Classic”. Look at page 180 and the “Tiffany & Co.” Classics in sterling silver! They have a toothpick and tweezers! I got to find one of these.

  2. one of my toolboxes has a small yellow sticker that reads, “if you think osha is a small town in wisconsin you’ve got problems.”
    wifey managed to create the mother of all jewelry chain snarls in one of her evil eye necklaces. i sat down with a couple of boker stockman clip points and teased the knot looser and looser until it freed up. one of the few types of patience i can exhibit.
    rare earth, i.e. neodymium, is impressive. we have a supply store here called american science surplus, and they can get/ have some neat weird stuff including lots of powerful magnets. but they can’t get me genuine “bucky balls” (buckminster fuller inspired). reminded of this by magnet swallowing bovines (only here…) is that kids would swallow these things and the magnetic attraction was so great that they would find one another through the folds and estuaries of the intestines, causing cell and internal rot and apparently, in some cases death to the individual.

    1. Cow magnets intrigued me. I found this quote on several web pages. And if you read it on the internet it must be true! “What are Cow Magnets? Cow magnets are popular with dairy farmers and veterinarians to help prevent Hardware Disease in cattle. While grazing, cows eat everything from grass and dirt to nails, staples and bits of bailing wire (referred to as tramp iron). Tramp iron tends to lodge in the honeycombed walls of the reticulum, threatening the surrounding vital organs and causing irritation and inflammation, known as Hardware Disease. The cow loses her appetite and decreases milk output (dairy cows), or her ability to gain weight (feeder stock) Pictured above is a cow magnet, measuring about 8 centimeters long and 1 cm in diameter. The magnets are designed to sit in the cow’s second stomach.m It’s small enough to get there, but too large to pass further. And it sits there collecting stray metal before it can cause the cow pain. The magnet remains inside the cow for the life of the animal (and apparently can be reused afterward), and the presence of the magnet and the attracted metal in the rumen apparently has no effect on the cow’s health or lifespan.”

      1. Jeesh, . . . thanks, Mark. That is a whole bunch of information. I still plan to visit “Ralph”. He has educated me on cows over the thirty years I have known him. Sometimes, his cows (. . . the brown ones and the black & white ones) get out on the
        narrow country road. They are stubborn animals. Won’t move for a car. Just stand there, oblivious to the gyrations of frustrated drivers. Ralph told me that a cow sidled up to a car and leaned on it. Broke the driver’s side window.

  3. I really appreciate the feedback on SAKs! I will check out “Felix Immler”. Oh, I have learned to be careful with “RE” magnets. I have about a dozen of the “torpedo shaped” ones (. . . about 1 inch L.) and those are strong-ass magnets. My cat, Lou, knocked one on the floor and it literally flew across the floor and whacked/dented the oven door. I got it before he ate it! Speaking of magnets, I was at the local general store (old school feed & grain, hay bales, farming implements . . . Little House on the Prairie type) and there was a box of oblong magnets. About 4 inches L., and 1 inch diameter. Stacked like the “leather washer handle on my Kabar Mk 2”; except for the metal spacers between the disc-shaped magnets. “Marvin”, the store owner, told me that farmers put them into their cows. Supposed to attract pieces of iron and steel that get into the bovine. He didn’t say/know “what happens” when the magnet gets “loaded up”. I am going to ask my neighbor, “Ralph”, who runs a dairy farm.

  4. Of late, I have been engrossed with SAKs. This started when I recently landed a ‘Victorinox Evo 11’ at my go-to pawnshop, “Washington Street Pawnshop”, $10). The Victorinox website is fascinating. Someday, I will visit Switzerland and see their factory. So, I like Alox; and, I like the traditional polymer scales. BUT, the Alox knives do not have the toothpick and tweezers? I wonder why? I think I will send an e-message to Victorinox and pose that question. Oh, I like magnets. I am working on an idea to incorporate a rare-earth (RE) magnet for a SAK. Thinking of a telescoping one . . . like a pick-up tool when my keys drop into a grated storm drain! Victorinox runs a contest for ideas $$$$$$ I am happy to know that my “WOT” pals are doing well and staying active. “41 days to the Moran Show”. Our “Moran Foundation” has now hired a contractor to start building the knife school in Middletown, Maryland, on the Bill Moran Forge property. Light the Fire!

    1. Hocky, I have a few SAKs, and yes they do get addictive. I hiked with an Alox Bantam, with blade and multi opener, super thin single stack and about 1oz, though I missed the lanyard attachment ring. I like the double stack Walker in celador which adds the toothpick, tweezers and a reasonable small saw to the Bantam, all for under $20 new.

    2. Hocky, if you have t found it yet and you want to get the most out of your SAKs, take a look at Felix Immler’s YouTube channel. He has some incredible ideas. He’s figured out small magnets. Telescoping magnets is a great idea! And if they answer your question about the alox scales and tweezers please share it with us,

      1. My guess is that it is easy to have channels for toothpick/tweezers in a polymer mold, but with the stamped alox scales, that is too many 90 degree bends in too short of a space. Just my thought.

        And @stevet – No, We will not be at blade west.

  6. Clay – thanks for the prize, looks like I’ve got some cleaning to do when the kit turns up.
    I had 2 hikes planed for this week, both in Tahoe, so that’s not happening. In reaction to the fires, California closed ALL the National Forests. Looks like the National Parks are still open though, for now. I am hoping it stays that way for next week as I am booked on a trip to Kings Canyon for a hike round Raes Lakes, should be stunning.

    2. Have plans to drive down to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in a couple weeks, hope it’s open then. My recently retired mother is road tripping from Iowa to meet me there, and camp along the coast back up to Mt Hood. Last summer I visited Jedediah Smith as well, on the OR side of the CA border was a guy on the side of the road at a folding card table with a cardboard/sharpy sign “automatic knives”. I immediately pulled over, handed him my money, and pissed off my wife. I hope to see him again.

      1. Jason, Nice to see you posting? I was wondering if you were alright! We’ve gotten more coverage on the fire near Reno/Lake Tahoe than any other. I was sufficiently risk/unaware when I was 14-17 that I would have tried that milk carton challenge then.I had much better balanced In those days. If and when I fell I could bounce and role. I don’t bounce anymore! Knives. Indeed.

However, after spending a few hours yesterday dealing with the lawn sprinkle system ( most of it on my knees digging in the wonderfully dense north Texas clay with a hori-hori knock off) I’m feeling every day of my many years on this planet. So I’ll pass! I mean, who really wants their last words to be “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” ?

        2. Doing good enough. The smoke finally cleared this morning, feels good to breath again. I’ve personally never been good at bouncing, and have several cracked ribs as a reminder.

  8. “Iver Mectin? He was the disabled “Viking”, correct? “Ragnor’s son by the witch queen, “Lasix” . . . I miss Katherine Warnick. The ‘kindergarten car’ is cool! “Cloud Finger” is a harbinger from on high. I am starting to understand memes . . . I think; therefore I am Sam. Seuss was not a racist. That is just a bunch of “sheep drench”. I scored a vintage Gerber 400 (aka “LST”) at my favorite pawnshop on Friday. Made my rounds at the thrift stores and got a nice Wall’s work shirt with chest pocket, i.e. my 6th pocket! I spent a Thursday afternoon with “Barney” (Aubrey G.Barnes, MS-ABS) in his shop. We covered knife topics from ‘A-2-Z’. The “A” topic was “A. G. Russell”. Our discussion was prompted by “Clay’s” comment on the “Mosquito” article re “Why A.G. Russell went to China” to produce his company’s knives.. I gained valuable insight from reading the “A.G.” letter to his customers: and, to others who thought poorly of his tough decision. “Barney” related several “A.G.” stories, especially the role that Bob Loveless played in “A.G”s life. I wish that all of my “WOT” friends could have their own “Barney”.

      1. $7, no tax. It is pretty much excellent condition; I did remove a bit of “roll” on the edge – no biggie. Couple of licks on the butcher steel and a touch of ceramic.

    2. An LST is a nice score! Congrats. A fine 5th or 6th pocket carry! I hope your 6th pocket has a button flap. I lost a SAK in Lake Texoma leaning too far, and found out the hard way to keep that pocket buttoned up when I had a knife in it!

      1. I seldom carry a knife in a shirt pocket. BUT, I do know what you are saying about “leaning” over and “OOPs” . . . splash! Most of my “pocketed” (Is that a word? . . . I may have to reference my CMEAT diktionerry) shirts have a flap w/a button.
