I dig it. The smooth G10 scales will take some getting used to, but not until I send it off to Shawn Houston to get sharpened for a Maxamet, LC200, and now CruWear head to head Native shootout.

H. Clay Aalders is a lifelong edged tool user. He spent the past 20 years as a woodworker and fishing guide in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Tennessee. Coatings, coatings, coatings . . . “DLC” (Diamond Like Carbon) is used by Spyderco and is deemed the “best” among blade coatings that could last forever. “TiCN” (Titanium Carbon Nitride) is a close second. Spyderco blades made in Japan may use this coating. CPM CruWear has about “8%” Chromium (Cr); thus, it is not a stainless steel. Maxamet at approx.”5% Cr” is not a stainless steel. LC200N at approx. “15% Cr” qualifies as a stainless steel.
    (**Stainless steel is quantified as having greater than or equal to 12% Cr by standards).

    Interestingly, “DLC” and “TiCN” coatings are made to be “black” by a process called “doping” . . . add a drop or two of graphite.

    How the “H” in “Hocky” do I know this stuff . . . “Naval Nuclear Power School”, Bainbridge Maryland – 1972. Metals in nuclear reactor systems, e.g. core materials, piping, undergo ionizing radiation; Gamma and neutrons do some crazy stuff in iron, cobalt (Co) and zirconium. Ever heard of “CRUD”? “Chalk River Unidentified Deposits”. “Chalk River” is/was a nuclear power facility somewhere in Canada. Technicians doing radiation surveys of primary piping systems (these are pipes that carry water known as “primary coolant”) found “hot spots” in elbow joints, drains, etc. where radiation levels spiked. These “hot spots” had “Co-60” which is a gamma source. Half-life approximately 5 1/2 years. Cobalt is used in primary coolant valves in an alloy known as “Stellite”

  2. smooth g10 oughta be pocket friendly. curious about how grippy it is, but i know the 5 fits the hand really well.
    i hate the rough crinkly coating on my 1095 bk stuff- better to sand it smooth or remove and deal with corrosioin, the dlc on my 4v is smooth and a better trade off as that steel rusts pretty easily. my friend’s dlc coated 4v manix2 got some silver marks on it that looked like scratches. i had read somewhere the coating is considerably harder than the on cruwear so i rubbed the marks with an old cent and it all came right off. it seems more cosmetically exclusive on cruwear as that stuff’s pretty stainless.
    i’m really tempted by this.
