Weekend Open Thread: Unexpected Openings edition

Hey everybody, hope you had a great week. I have been busy promoting the site, as I described in my Buckeye Scoop post. Gathering memes was a bit of a grind this week. Lots of St. Pats memes, but that was last Sunday, hardly topical to this week.

It was kinda like that.

The closest thing that I could find to a theme were the self-inflicted woes being experienced by Boeing.

Every row is an exit row. Now they can charge extra for all the seats.

If you are driving to a knife show this weekend, be careful if you see this sign…

Brrt.

Checking in on the KNIFE Magazine Event Calendar…

Badger Knife Show

Next Weekend:

Arts in Metal Premier Art Knife Exhibition – New York

New York Custom Knife Show

Good to see the New York show back in (checks notes…) New Jersey. That is because NYC knife laws suck.

Tonight’s first musical selection goes out to Cmeat and Rick K., both of whom are from the Windy City metro area…

(kinda sorta NSFWish…ladies dancing in corsets)

Chelsea Dagger is the song they play when the Blackhawks score, something they didn’t do a lot of this season unfortunately (2nd worst record in the NHL). I am a ‘Hawks fan, which isn’t too much different than rooting for Cleveland sports teams. That said, I really like the Fratellis, a Scottish band that is kinda hard to define genre-wise. I find it somewhat on the Punk spectrum

Quick note about the video…when the readhead bites the olive at the 2:16 mark, I find it every bit as sexy as the Rita Hayworth hair toss in Gilda. What say you?

A couple of other somewhat topical memes…

As much as I like boxing, I am going to give that one a pass.

Just had fried cod for dinner tonight myself. I have had gator tail, the arm seems less appetizing.

Who else’s bracket is trashed? I was doing alright up until Auburn crapped the bed. I had them beating Marquette in the final. Marquette’s Coach Shaka Smart was a year behind me at Kenyon. We weren’t friends or anything, but with only 1400 students, you pretty much knew who everyone was. Anthropology and Sociology were in the same building, and I’d see him from time to time.

It has been several months since this was a theme for the WOT, but this one was new to me. I laughed.

Flashback to last week…

Easter is just around the corner…

Since I have distanced myself from MLB, due to the fecklessness of the Cleveland owner, and the Commissioner’s determination to destroy the game, I am just amused by this Ohtani situation.

There is no way that MLB is going to kill their golden goose. They will blame the whole thing on the Translator and shove it under the rug. Unless the Feebs decide to get involved, which I have read is a possibility.

Editor’s Note: This was originally the space where we had the contest drawing. One of our regular readers has suffered a personal tragedy,  which he details in the Comment section. I had posted this meme after the contest section of this post because he had not commented in more than a week, and I was getting concerned. He is a retired USN Submariner, and a valued part of our community.

So I am suspending the contest for a week. Feel free to leave him a message in the comments, and the CRKT drawing will be back next weekend. -HCA

I had noticed Hocky has been quiet, but I hadn’t realized how quiet until I looked and saw he hasn’t commented since before the last WOT. I dropped him an email. Our thoughts are with you buddy.  Hope everything is ok.

If you spray the slide with Pam, you go faster, and your eggs don’t stick to it.

Checkmate.

I can certainly relate.

Strangely comforting.

I heart 216.

My name didn’t often come up.

Funny? Or scary?

You probably should have expected it.

One of those stupid, but funny memes.

Men and Women are fundamentally different…

Who needs collapsing bumpers?

You think you are having a bad day…

Shots fired…and landed…

You sunk my (Battle)Ship of the Line.

It takes months after SHOT Show sells my email address  each year to clear out all the new spam and unsubscribe to all the lists.

Ahh the good old days.

Back when housing was affordable.

I hate when that happens.

Asking the important questions. And the answer is D.

So much quality time together.

FAFO.

Mark Zuckerberg approves.

Definitely not in psychology…

Sorry for the potty humor.

Don’t tell GI Joe.

One of them was Metallica…

Switching gears for a moment, as I have every Friday night since October 7th, I am using my platform to stand in support for the State of Israel in their fight against the genocidal terrorist group Hamas.

There was a ceasefire in place (violated only by frequent rocket barrages from Hamas) on October 6th. This war was started by Hamas, whose chartered goal is the extermination of the Jews. It could end tomorrow if the hostages were released.

What shocks me even more is the disturbingly broad support for Hamas in the West. I was encouraged to see pushback to Director Jonathan Glazer (who himself is Jewish) when he used his Oscar speech to side with Hamas and excoriate Israel. More than 500 Hollywood professionals signed an open letter condemning Glazer’s remarks, and another 500 have joined on since then. You can read more at Variety.com, but the text of the open letter is below…

We are Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals.

We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.

Every civilian death in Gaza is tragic. Israel is not targeting civilians. It is targeting Hamas. The moment Hamas releases the hostages and surrenders is the moment this heartbreaking war ends. This has been true since the Hamas attacks of October 7th.

The use of words like “occupation” to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years, and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history.

It gives credence to the modern blood libel that fuels a growing anti-Jewish hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.  The current climate of growing antisemitism only underscores the need for the Jewish State of Israel, a place which will always take us in, as no state did during the Holocaust depicted in Mr. Glazer’s film.”

Well Said.

I look forward to being able to retire this section of the WOT. I will not abandon it until Israel declares the war to be over.

Once more, I bring you the Fratellis. One of their more upbeat songs. Look out Sunshine isn’t one of their better known tracks, but I have always enjoyed it…

Things are rough out there…

1984 was meant as a cautionary tale, not an instruction manual.

It is the best I can do.

Stay safe everyone. Have a great weekend.
